Trademarks and patents both expire.

Trademarks are used for naming/branding. They can be renewed at the end of the term by the original owner. If the original owner does not renew it is open to be trademarked by someone else or used freely by anyone if no one trademarks it.

Patents are used for inventions/technologies. They cannot be renewed. Once it expires everyone is free to use it.

and while on the subject of intellectual property protections ...

Copyrights are used for creative works (books, music, movies, etc). Like a patent, when a copyright expires the work becomes public domain and is free to be used by anyone.

Ford learned this lesson with the GT40.

I still remember this conversation we had months ago...

I was right... it was a track package for the ZL1.

You were right... they didn't call it a Z28.

We must meet for coffee and discuss cars more often.

So this raises the question, what is the big winged Corvette we've been seeing? Seems everyone is talking about a ZR1, but with the arrival of the ZL1 1LE..... Also the Z06 already has a track package in the Z07, so what are the potential track option packages of Corvette's years past that could fit the bill now, ZR2 and SS are all I can think of at this time. Z51, Z06, Z07, Grand Sport are already used.

I thought it would be a package, but I too did think it would be called Z28.

Looks like Al O wasn't lying when he said we were mistaken for saying the ZL1 with aero was the Z28 at factory fest this past summer

L88 was trademarked by GM in the last few years....possibility but who knows.

Also Chevy has said don't count out Z28, however IF and/or WHEN it will be "Normally Aspirated". If from a credible source it's good to hear they will preserve the moniker to stay true to heritage. Chevy should have treated ZO6 moniker in the same fashion staying NA for track weapon.

Why would GM build a Z/28 with the ZL1 1LE already released?

To make Ford feel even worse about their GT350R which sports no radio, AC, backseat delete and expensive wheels until you add those options (besides the rear seats which you cannot add) which totals it out to 68k before markup... For not having to pay for the extra options the ZL1LE looks even better if it comes in around 70-73k, but even the base ZL1 is better than the GT350R in price and performance.
