California Legal Exhaust Mods?

Anyone know what you can do to your exhaust and still pass smog in California? I have a 2017 RS and I was looking into either an axle back or cat back set up, but I don't know if getting rid of the secondary cats will allow me to pass smog. Also what about an x or h pipe? Not worried about sound limitations as it's only a v6, but what all can I do while still passing emissions?

Move to Texas or Arizona like everyone else.

Sorry I had to

Seriously, call a reputable shop and ask, they should certainly know.

Absolutely nothing that will alter the emissions system. Basically an axle back only

Axleback only. Can't really do much out here in general to cars. Can't really even tune anymore unless it's approved by the air resource board

As long as you do not remove or modify the cats or any emissions related components, you will be fine smog wise. I have the Borla “S” type cat back and are fine since it starts just behind the second set of cats. Removing or modifying the cats is a guaranteed failure. Also, a loud modified exhaust can be reason to initiate a traffic stop. The officer can then site you for modified exhaust and send you to a referee station. At that point they will scrutinize every part of the emissions system and exhaust DB level. Yes, this state sucks big time!

I read somewhere CARB is proposing a photo database of the underside of vehicles that will compare to the test vehicle, if the components don't match you fail. Can you imagine the damage to the aftermarket exhaust market and the damage to your wallet as you'll have to purchase OEM CAT's and pipes? No end to what the commies can dream up it seems.

It might still be legal in CA to make some “vroom vroom” sounds with your mouth but it’s best to consult a lawyer before you do that just in case.

Google "Legal CA exhaust mods"...

Basically no mods to cats, no cut-outs or by-passes, exhaust must include mufflers that do not exceed 95db...Good luck.

Also any traffic stop for loud exhaust is a mandatory fine and citation. No more "fix-it" tickets. Smog Referee, db check, fine and court date with proof of correction are required.
