I do love the four images in the OP, though.

Image 1 - Key! Got it.

Image 2 - A shiv or something... I'm not sure what that is or what it has to do with restoring the switch-blade...

Image 3 - A 2nd, closer image of the shiv-thing. Ok?

Image 4 - Key removed from the plastic. Ok.

Image 5 - And it's fixed!

Not very different from -

Step 1 - place key on table
Step 2 - ?????
Step 3 - PROFIT!

I cut my plastic piece off with a pair of wire cutters "dikes". Just snip it on the back side where the hole is at, and it will break to the other end. Three cuts and it was off. No need for a vise, or anything to hold the key.

Doesn't everyone realize that the electric power steering keeps working even if you turn the key off when moving. And the steering wheel won't lock. So what's the big deal. The brakes still work as well for at least a couple pumps. Enough to stop.

I'll probably end up doing mine. I'm going to save them the trouble and take one key in (in the ignition switch to drive the car) and the other fob having the "old" blade and pin already taken out and left at home.

Then they have both original fobs, they program both new keys, and I simply take the key ring off when I get home on one of them and re-install my key blade I removed before I took it in. Use the old switchblade as normal, and put the spare keys up for the next owner (in about 15 years or so).

If they don't like it, then they don't have to re-key it. No skin off my back.

You know whats dangerous? Driving down the highway in a Chevy Sonic and having the car go into limp mode @ 65mph and not being able to accelerate due to an issue with the gas cap..... Look it up if you dont know.

I had a Chevy Sonic rental (dont ask me why I got that, cheap ass insurance I was dealing with for the other party) and it did just that. There are tons of issues with the gas caps giving faulty signals to the ECU and throwing the car into limp mode, even while traveling at higher speeds.

That said, thanks for this I am going to head to HF tonight to grab the roll pin assortment. When the dealer gave me the keys this weekend, I was kinda like WTF??? I had no idea about the recall or why. Glad I opened up this thread (and the other one "Reversing the recall"). Thanks!

When I picked up my '15 about a month back, the handed me the keys and the fobs had no key in them as per the recall. However, there was no indication or paperwork given to me of this being an issue or preventing me from installing new keys into the fobs. That being the case, I simply decided not to destroy the two keys and go down to my local locksmith and have 2 new blanks made to fit my fob. The cost was a little more than I would have liked to paid, but hey, he had the blank and the pin and he made me 2 new ones, tested them, installed them into my fob and now I essentially have 4 keys.

I'm not sure what the recall was (other than to remove the key from fob and add extra ring for a total of 2), all I know is that if it was for interference from the driver's knee to the fob, I must have excessively short legs as mine don't even come close (I'm 5'9" and I have enough room that the hanging keys off the fob still don't hit my knee).

If I have a dead switchblade FOB (fried the circuitboard inside) and haven't been serviced for the recall, can I technically go to the dealership, get a replacement recall key, and then simply covert it to the switchblade? I don't feel like paying $40 for a new FOB and either getting it cut or knocking out the pin to swap the blade. I also probably can't reprogram it myself since the old key fob is dead.

Or do they take your actual existing key and just move the blade to a standalone plastic key holder?

I went in today to get my oil changed, and they asked me if I wanted to do the recall on my key and I said nope. She said did you know that they are going to start holding your registration if you don't get it done. I said I'll wait on that to see what happens. I mean reallyyyy!

My knee doesn't come close to the key. Wonder what seating position and thigh bone length you need to shut off your car? I didn't take my 2013 in for the recall and all I have gotten from GM is a reminder in the mail but no threats.

I almost got into a fight at my dealers. They ganged up on me and wouldn't let me leave if I didn't hand over my key. Obviously I told them to F** off. But now I'm afraid of taking my car there for service.

Does the car run if I buy a regular key from the dealer and then turn in my car for service without giving them my switchblade?

Yes, that's what I do. For the recall dealer just handed my the 2 keys so now I have both switchblades and 2 keys. But since your profile says Drives:none, they probably wouldn't order you one.
