A8 Transmission

I took my car to the dealership because the downshift when braking slowly is a bit rough, especially at 20 mph ( downshift to 2nd gear). The mechanic went for a ride with me and he said its the computer doing that and he cant do anything about it, any ideas?

I think it's a live-with-it thing. Someone posted in a thread I made that it may be an inherent quality that is just there.
yea I was hoping it wasnt a common issue, now I must use manual shifting when am down shifing then

Mine under hard acceleration or downshifting at highway speeds shifts violently from 4th to 5th. Dealer said they couldn't find an issue.

It shifts so hard from 4th to 5th under WOT that it spins the tires.

I should make a video of this nonsense.

I've never had full automatic mode downshift while breaking. No issues in full auto mode.

In tiptronic mode the only issue I have is shifting from 3rd to 2nd while slowing down. If speeding up it's fine.
while breaking slowly I put it in tiptronic to check what gear it did that on, saw it was 3rd to 2nd,but yea I meant full automatic downshifiting

I have noticed that my auto never downshifts to 2nd, it's always 3rd to 1st, even in performance mode.

There is a software update for the tranny/ecu. My 16 RS was a GM Buyback so when I bought it I had my dealer check it all out and they confirmed it had the update. Maybe check and see if they need to apply it to yours. Mine shifts really smooth unless U pushed it into performance mode

That's normal. I had this happen in my other vehicles too. Don't know the exact reasoning for it but it seems to be the norm.

I swear gm programs their transmissions to randomly downshift to hard and randomly upshift inconsistently hard. The worst part about it is that you don't know how it's going to shift next time.

Well I took it again and the mechanic did reset the gear ratios(its done by GMs servers he claims), and the problem is exactly the same lol.I guess i will just live with it, If anything happens to my tranny because of it ,then the dealer has record that I brought it up to them before and they did nothing

Looks like they did a relearn. It might make the shifts feel different for a little while but it will adjust back to its usual behavior. I've never owned a non gm transmission long enough to observe the shift behavior but I really do think the way gm programs the shift quality and timing dosent optimise smoothness.

I believe there is a TSB to reprogram shifting on the T4/V6 A8 transmission. If your Camaro doesn't have the update then you might want to check with the dealer about getting it.

I believe the A8 can be put into a "relearn" mode where it will recalibrate the shifts but I don't know if that will fix the problem or (as stated above) the transmission will just revert back to the way it is now.

I would take it back to the dealer and let them test drive with their diagnostics running to see if they notice a problem with the torque converter or transmission that is causing the problem.
