Thoroughly Confused

I have read so many different threads and have been left with more questions than answer. Can a 2017 SS be tuned or not??? I am not that familiar with tuning a car (at least new ones) so a direct answer would be great. I keep hearing that computer is different than the 2016. If it can be tuned, what does the tuner need as far as software, etc? I guess a basic overview of tuning options for a 2017 would be helpful.

Thanks

Yes.

HP Tuners is the best option that I know of for these cars.

Keep in mind, once you tune your drivetrain warranty is gone.

The 2017s can be tuned. I've done a couple of them already with E85. 2017 A8 TCM tuning is now available as well with HP Tuners although it is not a user friendly process anymore due to the changes GM has made.

If there is anything I can help with please feel free to contact me.

Thank you,
Tim

What if you purchased a new ECU to tune with and saved your OEM ECU?

Would GM be able to tell you switched ECU's?

I think the short answer is yes they'll be able to see that you ordered the ECM for your VIN, and I'd guess there are probably other control module logs within the car to detect the ECM swap.

In the spirit of whether you could get by with that approach, there's not been any consensus on this forum that I've seen. Some folks claim it'll work. Others claim it won't.

IMO, I think you could generally get by with that approach for non-engine warranty issues. However, in the event of a catastrophic engine failure, there's at least a chance that the dealership will want to dig a little deeper.

Practical response... if you can't afford the repair bill don't do it.

Man! Y'all need to make some better relationships with your dealer service managers. My car is far from stock. They haven't given me ANY grief to date. Granted if I threw a rod, I'd be on my own but as far as them "voiding" my warranty, not a concern.

It's all about relationships.

To an extent. If the dealer goes to GM with a hole in the block GM is going to request information from the ECM. It will be out of the dealer's hands unless the dealer chooses to pay for the repairs out of their pocket.

20 years ago you could talk your way through to full coverage. Not anymore. Nor should we expect GM to cover issues they didn't create.

Are you saying all tuning is the source of engine issues? I thought they had to prove the tune is what caused the issue.

NO when done properly.

True but not a battle you will win without a lawyer and the media on your side.

Like I said it is so rare but you are your own warranty station.

It's all about relationships.

Ive bought 3 cars from our local dealer, Wild West Chevrolet here in Yerington NV, and the service manager Steve is now a pretty good friend. He will let me do some exhaust changes, axle or cat back and minor mods like CIA, throttle controller, catch can and still back up the warranty on the car. I have a new SS1LE and just started on a few external mods.

I asked him about a hand held tuner yesterday since I've been thinking about long tube headers, such as the SCT and yes even if you put it back to stock the ECM is tagged. He told me that when they have a serious engine or drive train failure GM makes them remove the computer and send it into them.

Warranty would be void as soon as they see it was played with period.

Of course you could try to fight it, but what a hassle that could turn into.

For now I plan on doing what I can without a tune for this reason.

Cheers Dale
