You can try bleeding the brake and clutch slave cylinder. I'm guessing its never been done. Over time the fluid starts to break down and cause issues with the hydraulic operation. Sometimes a full flush and fill can fix things.

There are a lot of parts that can wear or get damaged in the drivetrain. As stated, your syncros could be a problem, you could also have a bent or otherwise damaged shift fork. Does it grind when your shifting into first, that could be a faulty clutch/hydraulic component, or does it feel like the gear is blocked off? When you shift it into first and then start rolling does it ever pop back out of gear? Did this start suddenly or has it been problematic at an increasing rate/severity? How many miles are on the car? Miles would help to know if you're at a point where something specific has typically worn to a problematic point. What kind of troubleshooting and maintenance has been done already to the drivetrain?

You wouldn't walk into an electrical shop and say "my lights don't work, what could it be?" and then ask again after they ask if you changed your bulbs or plugged the lights in without providing more information.

I would start with the hydraulic system. Check the hydraulic fluid, make sure it's topped off, no air in the line, and not gross looking. If that seems fine your clutch master cylinder could be leaking by causing the clutch to not fully engage. You should feel lighter pedal pressure if the master is leaking. If your throw-out bearing went you could have sheered some springs on the pressure plate, or at least worn and bent them. Sounds like the issue is likely in one of those areas, kinda just going to have to go down the line.

pedal moves about 3/4" of free play
cant remember if it allways did that
seems most hydro systems are hard right on top no play
Any way to take up play?? agree a little more pedal travel would help to disengauge
