Just cancelled my GT350 pre-order and bought a '17 ZLI

I am beyond excited! I pre-ordered a GT350 in late August. I had done quite a bit of research beforehand and what kept coming up in my searches; questionable longevity of the engine. At the time this didn't really bother me as we all know high performance sports cars are all going to have issues... and I know the ZL1 is no exception. After further exploration, and scouring the internet, I started to build up some intense anxiety on the GT350. Apparently the issues have been addressed and fixed for 2018..... but that wasn't good enough for me. Since I've always owned FI cars, I knew it was destined for a supercharger. I was still hesitant to sink 60k into a car with an engine that could be a ticking time bomb.
Long story short, I ended up going into the Chevy dealership and driving the ZL1. After deliberating, it's became apparent there wasn't much comparison. They both drive unbelievably nice, but the Camaro is just nicer all around. The interior feels more thoughtful and special. The engine is already supercharged and warrantied (unlike the GT350) and begging for a driver looking for a heart-throbbing, gut wrenching driving experience. Needless to say, I fell in love.

I purchased the car from Herb Connolly Chevrolet. Its a 2017 Black 6spd with the Nav & PDR... 3k miles, one owner. Chevy also added a CPO to the car for an additional 12m/12k miles.
Any one had dealings with this dealership in the past?

Can you guys give me some of the common things I should be checking for when I go to look at it? I know with the Shelby's, correct positioning and installation of the front splitters has been an issue...seems so simple and stupid, yet still dealerships getting it wrong. Is there anything specific and obvious I should be looking for? Further, is there anything not so obvious that might be indicative of future issues?

Lastly-any one have experience with shipping a vehicle halfway across the country? I am in STL and the car is located in NY. I plan on shipping it enclosed. I have heard of Plycar. Any others?

Remember- this post is not to bash on Mustangs. I currently own a 2013 Whippled 5.0 that has been a truly tremendous vehicle for the past 5 years.

May I just say, I am VERY happy to be a new ZL1 owner. Holy shit am I excited! What an incredible machine Chevy built.

Got the car for 57.8k. Fair price for 3k miles with CPO + Nav, Sunroof, PDR?

Nice, congrats! The only things to look out for that come to mind are the end links can be loose and make a clunking sound. Easily fixed.

There’s something with the front wheels that they may make a clicking noise at speed in a turn. An easy fix to take them off, scuff and clean the contact surface then torque them properly. That seems to come back for some people though.

Lastly, the ride height on 2017’s built before April should be adjusted down for the front only.

I think I got those all right, someone will chime in if I missed one or wasn’t quite right describing any of them.

Intercity gets good reviews on shipping too.

Good luck!

WOW congrats!! I was looking at that exact one. it was in Framingham, MA correct?

Man, you beat me to the punch!!! I guess I am going to have to travel for another one.

and I was on the same boat with the gt350. after joining the forums and facebook groups for gt350 owners, it seems like they're as unreliable as some turbo 4 bangers. its crazy.

the ZL1 might have its own little issues but they're more like nuisances and things that can be fixed. It wont leave you stranded or without a car or tens of thousands of dollars poorer.

Hope you enjoy the car! Did you get to test drive it before buying btw? it seems impossible to even get a test drive from certain dealerships!

Were you looking at the R or non-R? Performance-wise the Shelby can't really touch the ZL1. And I wouldn't dare put a blower on a GT350. There is too much of a risk that you'll blow the engine. If you have a Whippled GT already then I think you made the right choice in getting a 6th Gen ZL1.

I'll add that I did consider a GT350 for a short period of time. Everytime I put a list together of cars I was interested in around the $50K-$70K range I would put the GT350 there but it would be towards the bottom. To me it just doesn't offer enough to validate it's price when compared to other cars in the same range. And I don't think Ford put enough into that Voodoo engine to make it reliable. It is a good looking car that's for sure. But no way would I buy one. Anyway, you'll enjoy the ZL1 for sure.

Having had a 16 SS I was torn. Came from Mustangs so naturally was looking at the GT350 once the prices came back down to earth. Finally found one with a few thousand miles at the right price. Negotiated the deal and then went for the test drive. My SS drove and handled better, sad to say. And at low end I think might even been as quick if that is possible! I passed on the pony and have no regrets.

You've chosen wisely.

Nothing against the Mustang, as I'm partial to them in some ways, but the ZL1 is a light year ahead of the GT350.

Not to mention the GT350/GT350R are typically way overpriced with the dealer markup. I don't understand why they think they have to artificially create an air of exclusivity by doing this.
