That dyno seems anormally generous for the torque, for either engine...465rwtq with no cam or higher CR is too much.

I see what you mean by that, and I think the Mustang would be faster and marginally better balanced with an LS3 under the hood. LS3 makes more hp and tq, so it makes sense it would be faster in a lighter platform.

As for packaging here is a picture of a DOHC 5L v8 next to a OHV 5L from a 1986 mustang.

I just want to know what was the secret to this Camaro that made 465 ft/lbs of torque with nothing more than a CAI and Catback? My former cammed, tuned, LTs, pullied, CAI car only made about 430-rwtq

It's amazing that this little pushrod motor, despite being such a dinosaur (as some are saying here) has won so many awards and dominated Lemans.

And you can bore and stroke it to 347 cubic inches. Actually, there is a kit out the can take it to over 350 cubic inches. And despite what anyone says, that Coyote engine has no significant fuel mileage over the pushrod engines. OHC engines have their advantages...they can be shared among different car manufacturers with different bores and strokes to get different displacement. But as far as straight performance is concerned, OHC does not hold a candle to the potential of pushrod engines. Not by a long shot.

The race engines are not built by GM, and while they are based on an LS architecture, they share no components. OHV has it's place today, and they are definitely not dinosaurs. Misinformed keyboard commandos will try to make you believe otherwise though. I saw the GT2 Corvettes run at Laguna Seca in 2010 and it was incredible.

The only thing I can think of that would be a secret is the way it was broken in, used the same break in procedures we use on our racing motors, but here is the dyno results.

Both are good engines, the one that is best depends on what you are doing. I love the high revving 5.0 because it lets me just use 3rd and 4th on the tracks I run. LS motors are great for building and project cars, and give that good old muscle car lope with even a medium cam.

Now let's be honest about the real performance king here in the lineup. The v6 camaro engine. At only 3.6L it produces 323 hp. That's almost 90 hp/L.

If it was 5L that would be 448 hp!
At 6.2L like the LS3 it would make almost as much as the ZL1 at 556 hp!

It acually would be a fairer comparison to compare the LS7 to the Boss 302 Road Runner. The LS3 cost a little over 6k, the Boss 302 cost well over 10k, the LS7 cost over 13k. So you see the LS7 is closer in price to the Boss than the Boss is to the LS3. It makes no difference either way because you simply can't bring the Road Runner Boss 302 into the discussion. The title of the thread says LS3 vs Coyote. Not LS3 vs Road Runner. A LS1 and LS6 are the same as far as design, displacement, ect.. But you cant call the LS6 a LS1. Its not the same. Same principle applies to the Coyote and Road runner.

You should be beating him. However, gearing also needs to be considered. It isn't always about how much hp to the wheels you have.
