Frozen Gas Tank, Any Suggestions?
I'm in cleveland, where its like -5 degrees outside. I pull up to the gas station to fill up my gas tank, and what do you know, i can't open the gas tank lid...It's frozen shut because of the extreme cold....I don't want to try to pry it open and risk scratching the hyper blue paint....
Any suggestions?

My shed lock was frozen today. I DO NOT suggest using my method i used to dethaw by using a propane torch. Worked great but using by a combustible (gas) would turn out bad.

Try the window washer fluid to de-ice it. The alcohol is diluted enough to not hurt the paint. Good luck.

Mine froze the other day too. I just pushed on the left side of the door till the ice cracked. Was then able to pry open the door and work the button till it freed up.

I had this happen to me today. I used a blow dryer, had it open within minutes.

Go into the gas station and ask them for a cup, or purchase one to keep in the car. Use their rest room for the hot of water. At the car, gradually pour it over the latch area, testing it every so often......I use to live in Rochester, NY - so I feel your pain |

Here is a safe, easy, inexpensive solution

I would stay away from hair dryers, torches or other sources of heat. Most gas stations have hot water and plastic bags to easilly to replicate at the pump safely if needed. Happy Motoring! |

I remember my dad using a can of spray de-icer on frozen car door handles when I was a kid. The stuff worked great! It may have been windshield de-icer. Walmart sells a Prestone brand spray windshield de-icer that might work just as well.

On the bright side at least the door isnt locked. this happened several times on Jeep except the jeep has a locking door that is released by a button inside the car... No way to pry it open unless you have someone sitting there pushing the button. not fun.

I've had luck over the years with just giving it a light rap with the bottom of your fist. It often isn't held by much ice. I've done the same thing with pop-up headlights.
