A word of advice

I recently bought a little 2007 4 cylinder economy car to use for the winter as I have taken my 2017 2SS off the road for the winter.

My Camaro has full coverage as well as 100,000 warranty protection from my insurance company.

The 4 cylinder has minimum coverage WITHOUT COLLISION, WITHOUT GLASS etc.

Guess what, surprise, surprise, the 4 cylinder costs more to insure than the Camaro.

So the advice is, check the price of insurance before you buy a winter car.

What did you buy? Sounds like a civic or accord since they are not cheap to insure because of theft rates.

Risk of injury in a crash makes a significant difference in car insurance. My 1999 Buick Lesebra is slightly higher than my Camaro and it all comes from personal injury charges. Newer cars have lot's of airbags and a few other crash retardant mods making them safer in a collision.

This video surprised the heck out of me.

Well, being in New York probably has a lot to do with it.

Same insurance coverage and driving records: 2011 kia forte koup 2.0 $289/month...2017 Camaro 2.0 turbo $76/month... Buyer beware indeed

Take with a grain of salt as these are different insurance companies, but still...

That's why I always call my insurance company for a rate estimate, before I even look at a car.

If you have them both insured, the camaro might be listed as a 'pleasure' vehicle. My wife and I have three vehicles, the camaro is listed as a pleasure vehicle because it gets driven the least. Insurance on it is about the same as my 2008 Titan that I drive as a daily driver.

It's all statistics and demographics.. The more people wrapping the car around a tree, the more insurance is going to cost.

When I traded in my 2011 2LT convertible for my 2016 2SS convertible, I was prepared for my insurance rates to increase. I knew gas would be more expensive, since it requires premium. I knew it would be more to service, since it holds 10 quarts of oil. I was prepared with the higher price of tires when they need replacing.

But my insurance rates went lower with the same coverage as before. That was a pleasant surprise.

Newer cars are supposed to be a lot safer than older cars but I personally feel safer in an older more solid car. I hit a cow at highways speeds (60-70mph) on Tuesday in my 1999 Olds Aurora and didn't get a scratch on me. It tore up my car pretty good but I was still able to drive it home. I'm looking for a new winter car now since it probably doesn't make sense to fix my car as it's old and not worth much.
