MOBIL 1 VS GM FOR 2016 2SS

Serious question and I always respect ( 90%) of forum participants..

Wife's 2SS with 4500 Miles... Love it..... Had dealer do Mobil 1 oil change and rear end change at 1500 miles. We DO NOT do any 0-60 runs, or anything other than little old lady (she is) who loves the car.

I am "assuming" that the Mobil 1 is way overkill for our type of use. I don't mind staying with Mobil 1 forever BUT; seems to me that the standard synthetic blend is 100% "AOK" for our use. Mobil1 for "tougher use"..

What say you?

Totally agree....either the dexos semi syn will work, or the m1 synthetic. I think for the average owner that does not do a lot of track, or wants to make sure his engine goes 500,000 miles as he's some type of collector, you can use dexos and be more than OK. That being said, m1 is usually so cheap at Walmart or Amazon that many just opt for it.

When I took mine in for an oil change, I saw them pull out mobil 1 and I commented to the service adviser that I was surprised because the car comes stock with semi syn. She didn't believe me and said her computer shows that the SS takes full synthetic. Not going to argue lol i just figured they were being nice

The quality of the oils these days is sooooo much better than 20 years ago. Mobil 1 is just good insurance, overkill no....

The Dexos standard is a semi syn I believe.

Semi-Synthetic is indeed the factory fill. It's plenty enough for the average driver as long as you follow the oil life monitor.

I'm not your average driver so I of course use Pennzoil Ultra Platinum for my 2SS.

People that are bringing up Dexos, you do realize thats just a certification which is on both types of oil. Pre-blend and full synthetic. Mobil 1 is also dexos certified, which as long as that bottle has that badge, it will meet all warranty needs.

Yes, we realize that.....the semi syn blended is known at dealers as dexos.....just tech slang......

A little OT but FYI all lubricants that are sold by GM under the AC Delco brand are packaged/blended by ExxonMobil

Was in for oil change for my 2016 SS and the dealer showed Dexos not Mobil 1. Is there a bulletin out.

The Delco Dexos oil is a full synthetic:

http://www.acdelco.com/auto-parts/ve...il-dexos1.html

It is just a poor name - it is a full synthetic with additional additives so they called it "blend" - which made us all believe it was a partial synthetic.

Basically the same thing as Mobil1.

Now that I'm done with the 2 free changes on GM....I don't track either, but oil changes from here on out, will be with Pennzoil Ultra Platinum or Mobil 1.
