Why do colors don’t add up but disappear?

Hi! Is there a business/technical issue to keep the paint colors, to add them up instead of ditching them every year?

I am trying to understand why GM didn’t keep the yellow, HBM and other awesome colors, as they would have a lot by now, just like Dodge.
Isn’t it just paint? Is it so hard to keep?

I am preparing for a future ZL1 and the current available colors... let’s just say I’m not a fan.

Well you have to buy what they are building(new) or find a used one in the colors you like! Either way you will enjoy a ZL1 just as many of us members on here do! It is an awesome Camaro!

Most of the Camaro colors are tied to the Cadillacs that are also built at the plant. Yellow is not only expensive but also didnt sell. Same with BVM. Not sure why Hyper blue was discontinued, but they may be planning on offering Riverside blue on the new CT4 and CT5

Hyper blue was the forth best seller, but it was a two stage paint, white then blue metallic.

Riverside is single stage paint and darker by two shades. I liked the yellow, why would that be more expensive? Shock, highlighter yellow is too garrish.

Yellow is expensive because it's not being shared with anything else at the plant. Im not sure if the Corvette yellow was the same on the Camaro or not.Combine that terrible sales on the Camaro in general....

Look at the build count thread. Yellow was the second worst seller in 16. Did a lot better than 17 but I'm guessing not well enough to justify it past 18 MY.

I like yellow on this car. And I wish BVM still existed. But it's a business at the end of day.

Metallic (two-stage) colors are already only available at a price premium. I also don't see why they can't simply charge for any "expensive" color but still keep them available, and I bet the lackluster color palette is seen as a weakness by potential buyers. Of course this is a business, but then aren't FCA running a business, too? How come they can offer a full spectrum of hues for the Challenger?

Challenger shares colors with the Charger. I'm sure the number of people who'd what a Krypton color Cadillac. Is extremely small.

Don't know why they didnt decide to charge 395. I'd also be interested in looking at 2018 build counts. Surely HBM production didnt drop off that much to warrant removal.

it's too bad when they have a color that is so popular that it goes away. Hyper Blue was one. i also didn't understand it when they dropped Inferno Orange after 2012. that was super popular.

still they offer at least some choices. up here in canada vw offers like 40 colors all custom all of them is 3000$ cdn or about $2300U.S. +8regular ones.
those colors are only for the golf R and the E-golf. don't know if you have the same options in the states..

i know it won't happen for the camaro, but i would definitly take another color instead of the usual choices that it's been offered. hey 2000$ on like 4 -5 years isn't that much.

just imagine if gm would offer like 40 or 30 special or camaro vintage colors or newer ones it would create a nice buzz+ imagine if you would have the choice of so many colors... it would be awsome or lots of headache? like a candy store one in every colors!!

Pretty sure it is more of a logistics issue than anything else.

They can't mix the colors, so they must have equipment for every color. Pretty sure they calculated that it wasn't worth investing in that equipment to sell only few of those colors

This doesn't explain why hyper blue metallic, the most popular non-white/gray/black color had to go but the much less frequently ordered garnet red metallic remained. All the more because there actually is another red on the palette, but HBM was the only blue color after ABM got discontinued.

(I love my garnet red 2SS and never regretted this color choice, but I'm also pretty sure GM aren't keeping it on the menu just in case I order another one . And, as far as I know, this color isn't shared with any other GM vehicle.)

The paint shop in LGR only can handle so many colors -- storage, valves, hoses, purge systems, etc. A drum of paint has a shelf-life and pot-life of only so long. So they must rotate.

To see where a given color is used, spend some time browsing paintref.com. It will show you how many cars use a given color, for example:

G7E garnet red tintcoat is used by Caddy and Camaro 2014-2019 in LGR.
and
GD1 hyper blue metallic is still used for several GM cars & SUVs in 2019, just not Camaro.

Aha, thanks a lot for the link.

So the Red Obsession Cadillac color is actually G7E and Kinetic Blue in umpteen other GM vehicles is GD1. This makes the picture even murkier for me, unless someone thought the new riverside blue would be an actual improvement for the Camaro and therefore obviate the need to keep HBM as well.
