New 2012 Camaro

Hello,

I am not sure if this is the right place for this question and I am sorry in advanced if it happens that this isn't the right place.

I am waiting to get my new 2012 Camaro in couple days and I just want to know if I have to run-in the engine. If it is best to run-in the engine before going wild, I want to know what is the best thing to do for running-in the engine, i.e, I shouldn't go beyond 80km/h, and for how many km?

It is my first car and I really don't trust the dealers in here, so I prefer to take an answer from experts or people with experience, just like you guys here in the forums

I really appreciate your responses.

Thanks.

I feel like I am writing an email, I am just new to writing threads I probably need time

Mohamed, you're going to hear inconsistent replies to your question. This is one of those topics on which there is not a consensus. Some will say forget breaking it in easy, drive it hard from the beginning. Others will say don't drive it like a grandma, but just vary your RPMs for the first xxxx miles. Others will advise you to change your oil at xxx miles and again at xxxx miles with Brand X oil.

I'm not going to advise you one way or the other, but prepare yourself for advice that runs the gamut of possible responses. In the end, you'll just have to pick a method and go with it.

Adam, do you know if those instructions are for both the V6 and V8 engines? The 4000 RPM limit I would think might change, depending on which engine you have. Just curious. They almost sound like they came right out of an owner's manual.

That because I believe it did come out of the manual GM does have a break in period that sounds exactly like that.

New school thought: Drive it like you stole it. I didn't drive mine any different than I normally would. My motor is Healthy, and I felt it loosen up a bit around 6K miles (before mods)

I would follow the manual. There is a break in procedure listed in your manual. You can listen to a bunch of joe schmoes on here but who is to say they actually know what they are talking about? At least if shit goes wrong you can tell the dealer you followed the prescribed break in method.

The V8 break-in is 1500 miles you can not go over 4000 rpm or 70 mph and vary your speed. I do not know about the V6.

I know others say drive it hard as you want, but for me i followed the break-in period from the owners manual and am following what the engineers and the company that built the car suggests. I have almost 14K trouble free miles.

Follow the instructions in the manual? Or some stranger you never met on the internet?

Hummm.... What to do?

Like mentioned, you're going to get people saying to do it both ways.

For me, I didn't change my driving habbits at all from the moment I drove it off the lot with about 10 miles on it. I waited a little bit to take it to the drag strip but I was getting on it pretty hard right from the start.

3 yrs - 15k miles and my car runs perfect. No engine issues, no oil consumption, and plenty of times at the drag strip and Auto-X events.
