So we dissected an L99 resonator today....

I am a GM ASEP instructor at San Jacinto College as well as a Camaro fanatic (unfortunately, my dad's the one that owns it). During Engine Performance class we were talking about Active Displacement. My dad had replaced his resonator on his 2SS (L99) with an x-pipe and was stunned at the discoloration of the resonator and the improvement in performance after replacing it. BTW, theres about 6K miles on the resonator. Our welding department has a very talented craftsman, Hector, who did the dissection for us. I was curious as to the design and why there would be so much heat buildup. Here's the pics.....

That looks like it would act more as a muffler than the two hollow trash cans behind the rear fascia.

Just shows you that with a few select mods, the L99 would be closer in power to an LS3..Would be interesting to see a swap on an L99 car where they just change the exhaust over to an LS3 setup to see how many lost ponies in the exhaust...that resonator has got to account for quite a few dead horses.

The L99 also uses different mufflers. They look the same on the outside, but they are very different on the inside. There are some pictures floating around the forum of the inside of the L99 mufflers. The LS3 muffers are a straight through muffler. The L99 mufflers have this crazy piping on the inside to help reduce AFM noises.

GM engineered this for those reasons, because logically peoples tonal expectations would be way off if they used a standard muffler system once AFM kicked in. Perception is everything, but I must say that like other members, its a boat anchor and get an aftermarket unit then tune out AFM.

Very neat

Regards
