Oil leak
So I've been leaking oil for quite a while, but recently it seems like it's leaking a lot more. I have to put a quart in before I head home (700 mile trip) or else my low oil light comes on.
I was underneath her yesterday replacing my o2 sensors and snapped a few pictures of where she was leaking from. This is right at the back of the oil pan. It also seemed like there might be some leaking by the oil filter, but I couldn't tell. Someone at one point told me that it was the oil pan gasket that needed replacing, but I just want everyones thoughts. Thanks

Could be the oil pan or a rear seal.

I'd agree.
Can you tell if it's coming down from the top of the back of the block anywhere (at the heads, valley cover)?

I'd be willing to bet the real seal as well. But it wouldn't hurt to go ahead and replace the oil pan gasket while you're under there.

As far as I could tell it was not coming from the top of the block at all, just seemed to be right there. So i'm seeing the main consensus being rear seal and oil seal. I may just take the car in and have a shop do the work so I don't have to wait till i'm back home on thanksgiving.

Rear main seal part number has been updated to reflect the new design: 89060436

I had a drips on my oil filter a couple months ago. It was the rear seal.

If the whole pan isn't soaked (like mine was..) it's a good chance of a rear main failure. Mine was a hell of a lot worse than this (to the point it coated my Y pipe in oil).
As was said, might as well do both the rear main and oil pan gasket. Also should do poly mounts while you do it because you're gonna have to uncouple the trans and jack the motor up to get the pan to slide back and out. |

Another POS Camaro shittin oil all over the place!
DON'T KILL ME! My name's Will and I provided the driveway and some wrench assistance during the O2 sensor swap. Actually looking to get into a Camaro SS or TA WS6 next summer! Remy, I've done some extra research and it's looking like the rear main may be the culprit; also appears to be the general consensus here. Looks like a pain in the ass to do as well. If you want to weekend tackle this in Missoula or Billings sometime, I'll be happy to lend a hand and some tools. Got an extra couple of jacks in Billings that appear to be required if you only have the one. Let me know what you wanna do! |

So that's what I'll do, rear seal, oil pan gasket, and poly trans mount

Well, when the estimates are stratospheric, I'll be standing in the corner with a wrench, a beer and a hammer... maybe just the beer and hammer... that's a lie, probably a martini.
I'll be in Billings most of the break. Only on thanksgiving day will I be down in Wyoming with grandparents and other family members. Any other time though, martini and hammer |

Poly motor mounts too Remy. Motors gotta come off the mounts to slide the pan back and out. Got my set for 75 bucks (motor and trans as a kit) on ws6store.
Shop time on my pan was 5.5, rear main probably another 1.5 and the mounts were.. Mine took 16 hours.. Prepare for them to not line up. Never do. |
