How much power did those 302's REALLY put out?

i rember talking to a guy at a car show with a z/28 with a 302 and he said 295hp with 295 torque.

i've heard a lot higher numbers than that. try 400.

That would be about right. All the stories floating around back then were talking 390-400HP. They needed 4:56 or 4:88 gears to really make a showing. They liked to rev.

ya...iv heard up to 435 hp...and ya they really did like to rev, most people back then could go pretty fast in there Z's. However, most couldnt get that fast becuz they didnt shift at the rit points...these 302's liked to rev. high and be shifted at a higher rpm. Most people didnt want to rev there engine up to the 7x rpm (i believe it was that high anyway..if i can remember my research rit..)that was needed. The Z's were very nice cars expecially with the cross ram and the 2x4 barrel carbs that were optional at dealerships

im telling my dad to stroke the 302 and polish and install a new tach but he wont... hes all about ORIGINAL...

The 302 in³ (5.4 L) V8 engine was only available in first-generation Z-28s (the 350 LT-1 was used in 2nd generation Z-28s), and was created in response to a Trans Am racing engine displacement limitation at that time of 5 litres (305ci). The 302 was created by installing a short-stroke 283ci engine crankshaft in a 327ci block, resulting in 302ci. This just fit the Trans Am limitation (the bores of the actual racing engines were tweaked to produce exactly 305ci) and this design (with special modifications for high-performance use) resulted in an unusual, high-revving engine that helped create the legend of the Z-28. The 302 was the only engine available in the first-generation Z-28.

I had 2 - 1969 Z/28's, one with the original DZ 302's ( 4" bore, 3" stroke ) engine. That car also had factory optional 4.10 gears. The standard gear in the 1st gen Z/28 was 3.73 and I drove several with 3.73's and they weren't much fun to drive on the street. Chevy rated the '68 and '69 Z/28's at 290hp at the flywheel. In reality they were about 390hp and really didn't make any power until 4500 to 5000 rpm but would pull to just past 7000rpm. The 1970 LT-1 350 ( 4" bore, 3.48" stroke ) that was put in the '70 Z/28's and Corvettes was essentially the same engine as the '68 & '69 DZ 302 ( same heads, compression, cam, carb, intake manifold ) with 48 more cubes due to the longer stroke crank and had a ton more torque.

If I could only find a copy of my dyno results, I'd post it here. Needless to say at the rear wheels the dyno said 330 something HP. Stock motor with the original heads worked over and ported along with the intake. I installed 4.56 gears back in the mid '70s and have turned low 13's on regular ole street tires through the chambered exhaust. And the car is very consistent.
When running the car hard(which I don't do much anymore), 7,000 rpms is the shift point and I can tell you in 4th gear at 7 grand the engine is still pushing you back. The vast majority of races I've won over the years was on the last 300 feet of the 1/4 mile....the 302 doesn't know when to quit.
