Bluetooth OBD-II?
Today, I was thinking about adding a Bluetooth ODB-II adapter to my car but I also wanted to go with something that would work well with Android, the iPhone and Windows. I'm not just looking to read codes, but I am looking to really just look at all the various diagnostics that the could be pulled. My guess is that any Bluetooth OBD-II adapter should work with any Bluetooth software, but I am not 100% sure if that is the case.
Can any confirm or deny that any of the Bluetooth OBD-II adapters work with any of the various software out there? Can anyone recommend an adapter? And can anyone recommend any software? |

Just make sure you only have it on when you really need it. From a security standpoint, broadcasting your OBD2 wirelessly for anyone to read doesn't seem like that great of an idea... bad enough people can hack our cars with the tire sensors.

http://www.finextra.com/community/fu...px?blogid=6189 "Researchers in San Francisco have been able to access a car’s central computer processor through an Internet-connected car alarm, and in Seattle, researchers “blacked out the make and model of a car that offered multiple pathways for hackers a thousand miles away to send out GPS coordinates, open the doors, and have a colleague drive away without a key in the ignition.” And a New Jersey man has developed an iPhone app that lets him unlock cars and start engines by voice." There's a saying called "security through obscurity" - broadcasting information about your vehicle that wouldn't otherwise be easily read can only lead to problems. Sure, right now it might only be "read only" through the OBD2 but how long before someone figures out how to hijack the signal and make it bidirectional and accept commands? Afterall, I believe the Tech2 computers that mechanics use to do all sorts of tricks with a vehicle's computers (turn modules off, change injector pulses, etc) is all done through the OBD2 diagnostic port... Is it a threat right now? Meh, more than likely not... but it's certainly something to keep in the back of your mind.

I use an ELM 327 bluetooth adapter and I use the Torque app on my Android phone.
I love it!

The Bluetooth readers don't work with Iphone unless you get the more expensive ones. I just bought one recently but I have no intensions of using it with a smartphone since I have a netbook. Let me just say that after getting the bluetooth one, i wish I would have got the cheaper wired one instead. I felt that the bluetooh one was sort of a pain to setup. You can't miss with the wires.
Oh btw, I bought mine for 20 bucks on ebay. If you go that route, look for the seller that is selling out of the states. 90% of the sellers are in Asia territories and will take a while to get to you. I bought mine from a guy in Texas and got here in 3 days and it was the same price as overseas. |

Just make sure you get a WIFI one for Apple Devices as Apple BlueTooth support is limited and the BlueTooth one is not recognised :-(
