Why don't engineers make a locking gas cap work with the key fob? Doors-check, trunk-check, now gas cap-hopefully coming soon!!

I wouldn't install this. Do you know why companies stopped making having locking gas caps or the door being locked? Because a gas thief would just break it and still take the gas. I rented out a room to this chick who did have gas stolen from her car. I work nights and I keep my car in the the garage so I'm safe. But if I was a thief, I would bust open a licked cap in a heart beat if I believed that premium fuel was inside the tank. I'd rather they just take the gas and not break something in doing so, because they will break it.

Less worried about thieves taking the gas (they can have it). More worried about haters dumping stuff in my tank (sugar, dirt, other unmentionable things).

There is that too, but they also can just break the lock. That's what the insurance is for. But just saying for thought.

My question is why couldn't Chevy just make a locking door like every other dang company? Is a locking door with a pull switch inside the car too much to ask for? My 1991 Accord has a locking door....

The first thing you will need is your key code. The dealer that sold it new should have it on the invoice, or any dealer's parts dept can look it up if you show proof of ownership.

The key code should have 8 positions. The glove box lock cylinder only uses 4 cut positions - positions 5 - 8 in the cut sequence. That lock cylinder for the gas cap in your pic also looks like it is only 4. So you will be using positions 5 - 8 in the code, 5 being closest to the head of the cylinder (key hole end). There are Right and Left tumblers to be loaded on each side of the cylinder, left codes on one side right on the other.

That looks so close to the glove box lock cylinder, one thing that may help you is to take out the glove box cylinder and carefully take out the tumblers and springs to see what order they are in that cylinder. Then duplicate that order of tumblers in your new gas cap cylinder.

Once you know the key code, a good parts department should be able to code that cylinder in < 5 minutes. Shouldn't even have to assign it to a technician. $50 would be criminal theft. Or DIY it for free.

If you can dissassemble your glove box lock for comparison, may not even need your key code.

yes. you need the locking gas cap for peace of mind.

I have them on all my cars no matter what kind of car I have. There are messed up people all over the place walking around who are jealous EVEN if you just "have" any kind of car.

Wow this thing is made to work with your factory car-key and people are STILL complaining about it like it's "inconvenient".

Exactly what I was thinking... its not that you only need 5 of the 50 provided 'tumbler' clips, its that you need the 5 specific tumblers that match your key.

I could see how that would be frustrating, trying to blindly find the five you need...
