Buying car out of state? Tax question?
Hey- found a car that I may want- but it's out of state. I'm in TX and the car is in OK.
I'm assuming I'll have to pay sales tax on the car in OK? What about having it registered in TX? How does the process work purchasing a car out of state?

You'll still pay the Texas sales tax when you register the car. The dealer in Oklahoma should be able to handle that for you.

I've done it a few times. Bought cars in Ohio, paid no tax, and then paid the tax when I registered the car in Michigan. I would assume the same would hold true in OK/TX.

We are in process of buying a car from out of state too. It depends if your state is a "reciprocal state" or not. But your dealership (if working with one) will work that out for you. Or just call your county clerk's office. They can tell you. We called ours just to be sure.

You won't pay tax where you buy it... You pay tax where you register it. At least that's how it is in Ohio.
If I buy a car in PA off a private seller, I have a few options, trailer it home, drive with no or illegal tags, get a PA temp tag. When I get the car to Ohio, I take it to the Ohio title agency where they do an Ohio inspection. I then pay he taxes when they switch it from a PA to an Ohio title. If I buy it off a dealer, I have no clue. You need to ask your state title agency the laws. Make sure you don't pay TWICE! |

Think everyone pretty much covered it. You pay in the state you will register it in. When i purchased mine from Becky she just cut me a check for the amount of the taxes for my state.

My experience has been that the dealer won't charge you the state tax from where you bought the car. You will however, most likely, pay the tax for the state in whichthe vehicle is registered.
Of course, state laws may vary.

this all true, but really all the state cares about is that the car has had taxes paid on... better to check with them on this... that is how I did it, had no issues..

I bought a car in CO recently and did not pay taxes there. I did have to pay TX car taxes when I registered it. I believe it was about 6.25% or so.

Sounding like it's going to be a pain in the ass... I was counting on financing the entire amount of the car, including sales tax. I'll call my county tax office and double check.

I believe that If you do pay tax in the state you bought the car in, AND your local DMV can verify it, then they will only charge you if there is a difference. At least that's the way it works in NV.
Quoted from the NV DMV website: "An out-of-state dealer may or may not collect sales tax. The Nevada DMV will verify whatever tax was paid and charge the buyer any difference between that amount and what would have been due in Nevada."
