Spied: 2014 Chevrolet Silverado

Spy Photos: 2014 Chevy Silverado Prototype

The current Chevy Silverado debuted in 2007 and is still a favorite with truck buyers. Strong powertrains (we especially like the 6.2-liter, 403-horsepower V8 hooked to the 6AT), great ride and a good-enough interior have kept the Silverado in the running while the other trucks got complete redesigns more recently. Both Ford and Dodge stepped up the game with strong motors, near-luxury interiors and serious strides in ride and fuel economy. EcoBoost? Coil Springs?

But now it's Chevy's turn to be the newest kid on the block. These images prove that Chevy is hard at work on the 2014 Chevy Silverado. The biggest difference we can spot is the new greenhouse. Beyond that, all we have are rumors. GM engineers are apparently unhappy with the look of the current truck, saying that it looks too feminine compared with the other trucks. More chrome and a beefier front end are the rumored fixes.

A less horrible rumor swirling on the new truck is that this new truck will be 500 pounds LIGHTER than the current truck which is already, in 1500 trim, 300 pounds lighter than the other trucks in the scene. Not only will this help with fuel economy, but it'll make the inevitable V6 much more tolerable.

OMG That's boxy!

The current truck is 'feminine'? I don't see any 'feminine' at all in the current.

I've never thought of the current truck as "feminine." It actually looks styled, as opposed to the newer Fords, which I've always thought looked boxy just for the sake of looking boxy, and a bit like random pieces of sheet metal welded together in the general shape of a truck. If the designers really were worried about the truck being "feminine," why are they dumping a V6 into it?

The lightweight part has me a bit interested too. What does that mean in terms of payload and towing capacity compared to the F-150 and Ram 1500? Or perhaps is Chevy just going to be the first in a trend back to more down to earth sized half tons, and cede the work truck status more back to the heavy duties (which don't have to go through EPA fuel economy testing).

I'm more interested in the powertrain(s). Please keep the wonderful 6.2 or some close variation thereof!

Oh yeah--ditch the godfersaken "clad" wheels too. $40K+ for that kaka?

Why keep the old 6.2L when you can have a Gen V V8?

As with the others, I wouldn't call the current trucks feminine. I don't really care for how they look, but they aren't feminine.

Well, if GM can maintain the strength of the current truck while pulling 500 lbs of weight out of it, it would net you 500 lbs of extra payload capacity.

Needs to do a little 03-06 front clip work. Give the truck some of that attitude back. Hated it at first, but let me tell ya.. it grows on ya after 9 years, and 146000 HARD miles.

Viva la Silverado!

They need to hurry up with the K2XXs so I can get a GMT-800 for cheap.

I like the looks of the 07-current, with the exception of no rear fender skirts. I think the GMC looks better, but that's purely opinion. The truck still looks more menacing to me (at least in black) than the current F-150, so I'm not getting the whole "feminine" comments. I'm really hoping that these Gen V engines improve on, or rather, FIX the problems associated with the 5.3L AFM engines. I'm one of many who've had to have lifters replaced (I'm on my 3rd set of lifters and second cam in 65000 miles on my 2009). Can't wait to see this thing un-masked. Not that I'm intending on buying one any time soon, but I'd like to see what direction they're going this time.
