MPG
So OK I almost want to wave the BS Flag on myself, but I can't believe this situation so I am here for anyone to offer some perspective. Last week my wife accidentally put 87 in my car and I have always and only put 93 in it since I have been the proud owner back in June of '09. I usually range from 12.3 to 12.5 MPG doing my DD back and forth to work. I expect to fill up every Sunday so I don't have to fool with it Monday Morning. So this past Sunday rolls around and I am thinking crap I forgot to get gas and sure enough go out to the car and I have a little over a 1/4 left in it. So as I usually do after I pump the gas I look at the DIC and it shows 16.4 average? I am thinking WTF? Same driving and it says I still have 85 miles left to go in the tank?? How in the world could it be possible to get better gas mileage on 87 and I have been putting in 93 all along which is more expensive and I get better results from a cheaper priced gas? Let me hear your answers!! Got 16,500 on the ODO and really didn't to drive it much early on in its life due to a military deployment. Just extra info..

You sure your driving habits did not change knowing you had 87 in the tank and were being extra nice to the car?

Your 12.3 to 12.5 on 93 is pretty bad. Do you always buy it from the same place?
If so, maybe the 93 you usually buy is really poor quality. |

Not the same car but my wifes X-3 BMW also did better on the lower octane gas. And it was the dealerships mechanic who told her it would do better with the lower octane. We drove from MASS to Florida, going down we used 93, coming back up we used 87. And it came out to around 4-5 miles per gallon better with the 87.

Hmm... Check yours and hers driving habits. When I can talk my wife into driving mine she drives like a little old lady since since knows how much I love it and she doesn't want to hurt it.
Also, might have something to do with the octane tables. Fuse pull and good gas might burn more.

I have been on a road trip for the past few days visiting family and have been filling up on 93 only. I have noticed that the slight difference in driving style on the highway and obviously speed a huge part in the difference between getting 22 and 28.5mpg. I alike to you would like to fill up my next tank on 87 to see if it increases at all over the returning trip.
Interesting info here. Does your car have a tune on it or stock because that would also make a huge difference Later, Will

93 can be all over the place, Stale, Mixed with 87, so you need to select a station that is very busy and sells the most fuel in your area. Also if the car is not tuned it could be stuck on the low octane table. If running high octane with low timing will result in low fuel mileage. High Octane requires High timing to be efficient. Ted.

I've heard of people getting better mileage with regular due to being on the low octane table.
I suggest 5 gallons of e85 with 10 to 11 gallons of midgrade. Runs a 7 % fuel trim at wot with about 27 degrees of timing. |

I used to run 93 oct but tried 89 and can tell no difference in mpg. I have done the fuse pull on several occasions and can't tell a difference there either.
