Question about pulleys

I spoke with a few tuners around here. One said thsy it's best to do an upper pulley instead of the bottom at 10% because of heat soak. But then I hear that the top pulley can lose grip and spin easier.

Which pulley do you mod and why?

Also what is a heat exchanger and should I use one on a 10% pulley and CAI mod? Maybe a stupid question but guessing it helps with heat.

Whether you change the top pulley or the lower, then result is making the SC spin faster.

You have a heat exchanger now. Changing it out with a larger/more efficient model is to gain more cooling capability.

it doesn't matter if you change lower or upper, What matters is how many RPMs you are going to spin the SC.. Either one will make More RPMs to the SC usually meaning more boost but will also generate more heat the harder you spin it..

As for using a heat exchanger with a 10% pulley. Most people don't run a heat exchanger until they are in the 20%+ overdrive range, maybe a little less in hot climate areas, but it all depends on when/if your car gets heat soaked, Heat exchanger are a great mod IMO, for your setup I would think money could go else where for now until you turn up the boost more

As others have mentioned, heat soak doesn't change based on which pulley you swap out. I chose to do the lower pulley for the following reasons:

1) The supercharger enclosure has to come off the motor in order to swap out the top pulley.
2) The lower pulley had to be removed for cam install so I swapped it at the same time.

IMHO a lower makes more sense because it can be swapped without removing the entire supercharger and the ring can be swapped for desired boost levels. I know Lingenfelter makes an upper pulley that has an interchangable ring also. It is easier to reverse if necessary too.

So in conclusion you better go find a different tuner because it's obvious they have no idea what they are talking about.

I think they are decent. He just said heat soak is more of an issue with the lower pulley. Just couldn't figure out why. And maybe that's not true.

Thanks for the replies guys.

Which pulley you use to spin the supercharger faster has Zero difference in Heating the intake air.

It is about how fast you spin the supercharger and the boost level that affect heating the intake air.

1 psi boost equals about 11 degree rise in IAT over ambient, for example 80 degree intake air +10 PSI boost will result in discharge temps of 190 degrees.

The intercooler will take that heat away to a point close to Ambient.

I like to stay around 11-13 psi and can make upwards of 650 RWHP at this boost level with the right combination of parts.

The lower is always the best way to spin the supercharger faster.

Ted.

Putting on a smaller top pulley with stock belts reduces the belt surface and can result in slippage (More drag) at higher boosts.

We prefer to do a combination of both the upper and lower pulleys. I don't like to go too small up top for risk of belt slip and I don't like to go too large down low because I don't like to add a lot of mass to the crank pulley.

Even stock cars can benefit from a better heat exchanger, especially if you track the car.

If I can answer any questions, feel free to call, PM or email me.

Best regards,

Tyler

How much do aftermarket heat exchangers help? With a basic 75 hp package

Seems everyone has forgot about this but some of the early 2014 models have a spring isolator in the upper pulley rather than the solid isolator that is in all of the newer cars. This isolator was a major factor in the supercharger warranty extension. If your car was build in late 2013 as a '14 model it should have that isolator changed and it can easily be done with the upper pulley. If you have the solid isolator then just do the lower pulley.
