CATCH CAN QUESTION.

Here is the question.

I was thinking that owners of the Gen 6 SS that have a M6 Transmission and they open it up, take it close to redline in 1st or 2nd for a couple of minutes, lets say, will that burn off or get rid of the debris that a catch can will? What do you guys think?


PS
My insurance company does warranty the engine for 100,000 regardless of a catch can. What's wrong with GM?

The SS comes factory equipped with a catch can already. Can't figure out why anyone would need to spend money for a second one.

One trick to a clean engine is to use TOP TIER fuel. (See your owners manual for details). I personally use nothing but Shell V-Power Nitro+

The oil/air separator is on the CCV. There is nothing for the PCV, hence why people get the catch can.

Exactly... take a look at the intake tracts and valves of many higher mileage DI engines.

that would be a viable suggestion if all DI engines were identical. A lot of effort goes into improving carbon / oil buildup each iteration of DI engines from each manufacturer.

That being said, there's already fairly strong evidence for the efficacy of additional catch can(s) on the LT1 and some initial evidence on the LGX.

My catch can captured this much in less than 5000 miles on my LGX.

I've been checking mine over a period of over 5000 miles. And I have two. So far they have remained clean. I just took a 700+ mile road trip though will be checking again.

Talking use better fuel

Yes, better petrol with detergents would tend to help this carbon build up issue.
We paid a lot of money for our cars. We tend to put the best oil we can find in them,
We should also put the best fuel we can find in our expensive Camaro’s.

On a direct injected engine, there is no fuel going over the intake valves, so, whatever fuel you put in, your cleaning detergent does nothing. The catch can takes care of the blow-by, otherwise sucked back into the intake manifold.

This exactly. If your engine has DI fuel will do nothing to keep the build up off of the intake valves. Not to say don't use good fuel, but in a DI application don't expect it to keep carbon/coking issues at bay. It can't.
