I've been in a similar situation. Don't worry about how you got paid. If you can legitimately account for that time then put it down. Don't lie about it. They really shouldn't ask what your tax status was. But you weren't under the table. You were a contract worker.

After that if you paid taxes that's up to you, I'm not asking, I don't want know. Just leave it at contract worker, but don't put contract worker on the resume, just what you did and when you did it.

Good to know..., maybe some companies do that. but I have never seen that occur in the 15 years I've been interviewing and hiring at a Fortune 200 company. We might check references but we aren't about to start calling the clients of a self employed candidate.

Getting paid under the table and not paying taxes is leeching off the system.

Just state you were a 1099 contractor. But you did cheat the system, so any risk you have is self imposed.
