500 Oil Change in OEM Manual
Hello all,
I just came across this extra manual that I did not receive from the dealership on my 2018 SS 1LE. It states that recommended oil change is at 500 miles. I was under the impression that it was 1500 when the break in period is. Anyone have any thoughts, I and currently waiting for the oil and a few parts from amazon. I posted the first half of this manual, I have about 1100 miles on the car should I do it now or wait for the 1500 mile mark? 2018 Track Preparation Manual 1. ATTAIN THE RIGHT MILEAGE NEW VEHICLE BREAK-IN Models: Camaro SS Coupe, Camaro V6 equipped with the 1LE Performance Package, Camaro V8 equipped with the 1LE Performance Package, Camaro ZL1 Coupe and Camaro ZL1 equipped with the 1LE Performance Package All Camaro models have a required break-in period during the first 1,500 miles (2414 km) that can help with the life of their performance. PART/DRIVING BEHAVIOR TIME PERIOD ACTION Tires First 200 miles (322 km) Drive at moderate speeds and avoid hard cornering Brake linings First 200 miles (322 km) Avoid making hard stops (recommended every time brake linings are replaced) Full-throttle starts and abrupt stops First 500 miles (800 km) Avoid full-throttle starts and abrupt stops Exceeding 4000 rpm First 500 miles (800 km) Avoid exceeding 4000 rpm Cruise control or driving at one constant speed First 500 miles (800 km) Avoid cruise control or driving at one constant speed Letting the engine labor or lugging the engine First 500 miles (800 km) Avoid letting the engine labor or lugging the engine. With a manual transmission, shift to the next lower gear (this rule applies at all times, not just during the break-in period) Recommended first oil change First 500 miles (800 km) Change the engine oil after reaching the first 500 miles Track or competitive driving First 1,500 miles (2414 km) Do not participate in track events, sport driving schools or similar activities Engine oil maintenance First 1,500 miles (2414 km) Check engine oil with every refueling and add if necessary (oil and fuel consumption may be higher than normal during the first 1,500 miles) Please note: It is recommended that the first oil change occur at 500 miles. They implemented the 500 mike oil change for all dry sump cars after the rash of engine failures. If you didn’t change it at 500 I would change it ASAP.

It's highly unlikely you'll have a problem, but do it as soon as you can just to be on the safe side. I'm close to a 1000 miles and will be getting it done this weekend. Don't sweat it.

Does the 500mi mark also stand for the diff fluid as well, or should that wait till 1500?

Also, for what it's worth, I have had 2 LT1 Camaros (one 2016 and then one 2017) that went to 1500 prior to the first oil change and went on to 8k miles so far without issue, but that was prior to the 500mi note being added (or I just missed it altogether). If it's in the manual I still suggest changing it at 500mi, though. Keeping up with suggested maintenance is a good way to reduce the chances of having rejected warranty claims in the future.

Does the 500 mi oil change apply to SS 1LE? And would it apply only if you plan to track it? What if only later (say after you reach 5,000 mi) you decide that you want to track it? |

Changed my oil and rear diff just before 1k miles. Both needed to be changed IMO. Diff was dirty.

I assumed they did because of the 500 mile change recommendation. Your right though they do not have dry sump. The track prep manual does say to change it at 500 which seems to contradict the earlier rule that this was only for dry sump cars. I would just change it at 500. I did in my 2ss.

In addition to the first oil change contradiction, the track prep manual also indicates that you can go WOT after 500 miles, but no track duty until 1500 miles, whereas the standard manual states a blanket 1500 mile break in period. I am left wondering which to follow! I may go with the track prep manual, to be on the safe side with the oil change, as well as having a justification to go WOT at 500 miles

The drain-plug on the SS is at the back of the pan. So elvataing the nose ensures the drain hole is the lowest point.

Same question as camaroras, I have the standard manual as well as high performance supplemental manual. Have a zl1 1le, just had the oil changed at 500 miles. Can anyone point to me where it says to change oil at 500? Guess I didn't get the extra manual? Also like camaroras stated, my manual just has a blanket statement of break in period of 1500 miles. Keep it under 80 mph, 4000 rpms etc etc. Cant wait to open this thing up, can someone elaborate please? Just trying to get clarification. Thanks
