BTW, NEVER use bleach to attempt to clean mold. You'll do more harm than good. Don't know how that myth ever got started.

Then, it peters out into nothing... over and over and over. Eventually, the public tires of hearing "Wolf!" being called, and the unfortunate result is that when there actually IS a legitimate "worst (insert name of disaster here) EVER being likely!" people have already tuned it out. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . The scientists thought it unlikely, and issued statements saying so. But, an earthquake DID strike, and people died. Anyway, after this trial and conviction, not only are Italian seismologists leaving their posts in droves, but from now on, ALL siesmologists and meteorologists and scientists of all flavors MUST always be warning the public of the worst case possibility for anything and everything... and false alarm after false alarm after false alarm will quickly make people disregard ALL alarms.

Midst all the ridicule, there is some good advise on this thread. If the water was only halfway up the car, there's a good chance you can recover it. My Dad went through a similar situation when the Mid-west flooded in '08. His farm was wiped out. car, tractors, pickup truck, sheds and antiques, all under water. We drove up and bought cases of WD-40, The WD stands for Water Displacement. It was developed by the military for this purpose. We disconnected (and threw away) the batteries. Took everything apart on the vehicles. Pulled out the entire interior and washed them out. Drained and replaced the fluids in the engine, radiator & trans. Removed the intake, exhaust, and spark plugs, then rolled it over by hand to ensure there was no water in the cylinders (surprisingly little). We cleaned every area we could reach, then blew out the areas with the air compressor and the wiped them down with WD-40. Electrical components should be blown out with air as soon as possible, then we sprayed them with electronics component cleaner. Anything that still had power when the water hit it could be shorted and need to be replaced.
It took us a little over 2 weeks, but of the 6 vehicles flooded, the only one we couldn't recover was the riding mower (it was a POS anyway). The only FEMA claim he had to file was for the lost crops and cattle.

^^^^ Correct- Nobody with any sense drops Comp insurance even when storing a car.
I question this thread without photos of the Camaro.

Good point...But if a car is paid for, comp is not required...some have their own game plan, so to speak, depending on the car and their financial situation...I've found, with older cars especially, that comp can be a waste of money due to how quickly they total cars these days and won't even repair them, or if stolen or destroyed, they're not worth the premium...lol...

OP sounds like a man of means, probably just his judgement call based on how much he actually drives it....Probably on a lot of new "toys" its not as uncommon as you may think...

As soon as any fabric gets that wet, where it soaks through, it's pretty much impossible to prevent mold. You would need to tear out all of the carpet, seats, and completely gut the interior trim, molding, and dash board. Then wash the metal with bleach. Then dry it out for at least a couple of days of non-stop fan/heat application blowing through it. Then replace everything with new parts (all plastics and fabrics, including roof liner, steering wheel, and dash/door/rear deck covers).

Mold is nasty, smells, deteriorates your fabric, and is hazardous to your health. You will most certainly have mold growing in your HVAC vents as well.

That's why a flooded car, even with zero electrical and mechanical damage, should be junked.

I feel bad that you do not have comprehensive coverage..... and I feel for all of you hit hard by Sandy - we got hit hard in the Cleveland, Ohio area too. Still 60,000 Cleveland area people without power - me included.

What? Really? So tear out the interior and clean it all. Replace the cushions if you can shampoo em and dry them. It sucks big time because its a brand new car but its not the end of the world. I've had to do a heck of a lot more work on my '81 Z28 interior.

The main concern is the engine.

wow that sucks. You need to get that salt off ASAP. The car can be salvaged... just probably wont be as reliable as it once was. Ive seen water damaged cars converted in to all sorts of things though. Show cars, race cars, etc. If you dont want to take that 36,000 loss, Id say put a few grand in to it.

From the level of flooding it doesn't look like water is in the cylinders it would of course need to be above the manifolds (not accounting for any waves of course) so it may not have got in the engine
For peace of mind - don't wait. go to the dealership, pull the plugs, drop in some marvel mystery oil or WD40 or something then spin it over if you can - the battery may be shot as that is in the trunk so take some jump leads. At least knowing the engine is 'good' may help your decision....
Then as a lot of posts here say -- its time to work it all out. heck, take out the interior, and clean it properly, even replace the padding (carpet should be good), check all wiring under the carpets and so on.

Its easy for any of us to give advice we don't own it, can't see it -- but best of luck, keep us posted, we are ALL rooting for ya
