Why couldn't they develop or commission a decent manual too?! Yes, I'm a little bitter... sure miss my Muncie Rock Crusher.
Grandad's 67 C2; F41 suspension, J56 brakes, N14 side pipes.

L89 power connected to an M22 distributed through a G81 rear... Sublime!

Gear and rear!

Slightly off topic, but that M22 is still amazing 50 years later.

Absolutely! I'd be impressed if they'd come up with a modernized version of the M22. Just give me some beefier gears, smooth synchros, and nix the torque management Nazis. If they did that in the 2019 ZL1, I'd buy one for sure.

We're still on-topic...

Are we absolutely sure the torque management is in place for the manual transmission or could it be due more so to a slightly weaker 6thgen ZL1 rear end that was downgraded from the cast iron "Grave Digger" 5thgen ZL1 rear end.

The grave digger is absolutely stronger but it definitely weighs more and it probably robs a few horses in the process. What do you guys think?

I'm also Camaroless at the moment and I hope the '19's bring some good pleasant surprises for the refresh.

If they make a Z28 than the ZR1 motor and CCB’s will happen.

No way to be absolutely sure but they do call this feature "Manual Transmission Protection" in GM Doc ID 4733151. Only one guy I know of has managed to break the 6th Gen ZL1 diff. Heavily modified motor and he's tearing around town, popping his clutch and speeding through public roads without regard to anyone else. If I were going with an LT5 and beefed up gearbox I'd probably put an updated (eLSD) Grave Digger in there too, just to be sure. After all, it's only a few pounds heavier - easy for the 755 HP LT5 to handle. They'd just have to engineer the eLSD to work with it.

I've had a camaro engineer tell me it was a mistake that the M6 launches the way it does, and that a software fix would be coming. They've since taken the position that it's all by design, which I will never believe.

The clunkiness of the menus for launch control and line lock, lack of independent road course and dragstrip modes, and the poor 1/4 mile performance is all evidence that the dragstrip simply wasn't a major design focus for the ZL1. My bet is that they probably didn't discover that the launching sucked in the M6 until it was too costly to change. (In computer simulations it probably launches fine.)

I haven't bought into the clutch protection theory. The clutch protection is supposed to be accompanied by a message when triggered. I've never seen a message. Also, people slip the hell out of the clutch to try to avoid the bogging. If it were all by design I'm sure they would have figured out that the design would ultimately result in more slipping/more wear.

IMO, it has nothing to do with anything other than poorly tuned engine management during launch. All of the crap they told us about drivetrain protection is just their default excuse for performance problems.

I'm still hopeful that the 2019 will be much improved. I'd love to see a horsepower bump and an option for CCM brakes. And of course, some fixes to help the driveability and launching.

I'll be watching closely and this is my hope as well. Unfortunately I'll probably own one before I get to see if things have improved.

No it won’t, because Al O already said the Z/28 is an N/A car.

Sad to say after 45 years of buying manual hi-po cars except for one 1969 GTO (it was $800, LOL) and a Lincoln Mark VII LSC I am an A10 convert. I was about to pull the trigger on an M6 Zl1 and then I drove an A10 ZL1. All of sudden my M6 bog worry was lifted. I felt really guilty enjoying the rapid fire shifting and also appreciated the GM time spent programming the shifting dynamics. I know it's not perfect, but I have not so far witnessed the A10 gear hunting. I thought I might like a PDK, but now no desire for that.

The manual is the better transmission for the the track, but a modern M22 would not be a good plan there. The ZL1 TR6060 is way more awesome, but there is just no gear whine and no TR6060 legend. I must say watching a fairly quiet 67 Chevelle on Front Street just skipping the front wheels on the launch and the gear whine is a great memory. The M22 was literally money.

In summary if there was no M6 bog issue I would have one right now. I think I am okay with that.
