Transmission Issue First Day I own 2016 1LT
I bought a certified 2016 1LT, V6, 6 speed manual, and had an issue with the car popping out of 4th gear the same day I purchased the car. It took almost a week before the dealership could pull the tranny and diagnose the problem. They say it is the 2nd and 3rd gear synchronizers. The car has 16,000 miles on it. My question is, what the heck would cause them to wear out so fast? Previous owner didn't know how to drive a manual? Bad parts from the factory? Is GM going to say it is a normal wear item if they go out again? Makes me very nervous. Any thoughts?

Since it is a used car, no telling how the P.O. drove it but I would guess not well. It will be covered under warrantee.
Have not seen a lot of similar issues reported so is probably just abuse & should not reoccur |

This is not a common issue that I know of. It is likely abuse or misuse by the original owner or a factory defect.

Agreed more than likely some abuse combined with poor driving skills. Sounds like the previous owner was power shifting 1-3, lifting the clutch to soon (between gears) and ground up the synchros.

I would suspect mis-use from the original owner. Manual transmissions are an art to drive properly and from random listening to cars (and even motorcycles) with manual transmission drive and shift, a lot of people do not know how to shift properly. I wonder how the clutch is on your car.......

Probably poor use, which is crazy because the V6 Manual has to be the easiest manual vehicle ive ever driven.

Yes, if it still out of the car I'd have them also throw in a new clutch, throwout/slave ... even if I had to pay for those extra parts.

I'm going to give the previous owner the benefit of the doubt and say it's more likely just an unlucky case of a bad gearbox or even a misaligned clutch/flywheel. Not a common issue, and covered under warranty. Now, certainly the previous owner may not have helped it, but people who don't understand a manual transmission are more likely to kill second gear than third I would think, and there would be a history of the gearbox being replaced pretty quickly if they were *that* bad. I'd be surprised if they could make 16,000 miles without giving up if they didn't know how to drive a stick. A more common problem with people who don't understand manual transmissions is that they tend to upshift waaaaaaaay too early and downshift waaaaaaaay too late and lug the engine. Another problem would be people riding the clutch too much and burning that out prematurely.
Ever seen the Top Gear episode where David Soul kills two gearboxes in a row? Painful stuff: |

Odd, when I read the OP the first time around I read 1st and 3rd gears - now I see it was 2nd and 3rd gears. Soooooo... I'll sit on the fence.

I'm the first owner of my 2017 SS. Within a few hundred miles on the odometer the transmission would pop out of Reverse gear ~50% of the time. I dealt with it until i had the dealer take a look at it with the first Oil Change. The dealer said something similar about the synchros being bad.
I'm still having an issue now where i get a slight grind when shifting into 3rd gear. Almost as if the synchro for 3rd is bad. It's a very intermittent issue and of course the dealer couldn't duplicate. I'll probably take it to a different dealer soon to have them review.

Dealer says parts came in, should be ready late tomorrow, so I will have it for the weekend. Sucks, bought it, and had it less than 24 hours before I had to take it back for the repair. That was almost 2 weeks ago. We will see how it goes once I get it back. I will keep everyone posted.
