I believe he's referring to the stock MUFFLERS as suitcases, I always thought they looked like I ran over a couple of trash cans and they got stuck under the rear fascia.

Try running a different muffler. SW retro mufflers sound good.

Put on a set of cats. Cars sound IMO 100 times better with cats, and you'll lose the nasty smell. Single chambers are barely legal to begin with, and having thin walled headers with no cats and single chambers is going to produce the very definition of "unrefined sound." You'll gain a lot of refinement with cats and you won't lose any relevant horsepower with a good set.

The suitcase resonator is the one a stock l99 comes with as it has both pipes feeding into them and are huge....lol
I used to run a thing called Monza tips on my last 406 SBC in a 73 chevelle ss clone they are in reality a small resonator and they would sometimes tweet with the cam as they are a tip. You can see inside them they have a baffling with multiple holes around the inside of the pipes diameter just short of the exit in the tip. Those are small resonators.... The stock mufflers are also known to suck and high flow cats do mellow the sound a bit, and I guess I am just old... Lol anyway the CLAP is what used to be a common nickname for catching a STD...... Yes and the stock mufflers are huge too...... Anything but them would undoubtedly help, and the CLAPPING you refer too I hope is not back fires maybe from leaking exhaust, but more in line of deceleration popping more in line with the sound a truck makes when "jake "braking to slow down with its air tanks down shifting...... Deceleration popping is actually a nice sound to those of us who like it as it shows up when decelerating or letting off the gas, and all the HONDA BOYS in the world can only dream of having our engines decel popping though their fart cans as they suck.....

I have dual mode with headers and high flow cats, If I want to not decel pop I avoid down shifting to engine brake and If I really want to eliminate it I turn my car on quiet by making it muffled. It will still mildly pop some though very less noticeable as its normal .
