Stock Hellcat and a Stock Camaro SS

No, it’s not a street race, don’t call the cops! My son in law just bought a ‘slightly’ used Hellcat - 5K miles. He let me drive it yesterday. He likes to cruise around in track mode. So I did too. It came with P Zeros and it was nearly impossible to keep them hooked up - in track mode, through the first three gears. If you pressed on the go pedal much. It was a manual trans.

I know many here have 700HP or more but my question is, can you really use it? Unless you’re actually tracking it, to this lowly, stock SS driver, it seemed almost too much on the street. Aren’t you either burning up tires or brakes depending on what mode you’re in?

It was the first 700+ HP car I’d ever driven.

Maybe I’m showing my age but that car seemed TOO much compared to mine. Time to revoke my man card?

I'm jealous, the most horsepower I've ever driven was 475 in my Grand Cherokee SRT.
Obviously I can't add much, but I am curious too. So I'll subscribe

I'd love to hear some of the 700+ guys & gals here as well.. I mean the numbers are just so unrealistic from the old days where that was really only found on drag machines or heavily modified street machines. Now it is not uncommon to hear those #'s and I wonder if they are real when it comes to raw power.. does something like boost exaggerate HP on a dyno vs. naturally? But based on OP experience it seems not.

My only high HP was a buddy of mine many moons ago back in HS.. he worked for a performance eng builder and had a sweet setup in a rather beat up 69 Nova.. recall somewhere close to 500 dyno #'s and when I drove it that was un-streetable.. now it had an open rear and plain radials but there was no time you could ever really hit the hammer w/o spin. Looking forward to my cam install with #'s close to that.. Boy was it fun but hazardous for what it was.

The car came stock with 275 all-season tires , but you could upgrade to 275 summer-only tires. No, with 707hp, those tires are too narrow. For a mere ~$7k you can purchase the upgraded widebody package, and it still won't hook up. The only way to harness that power is heated drag radials or slicks.

Fiat (Dodge) seems to favor hp numbers over real world performance. The Demon is good for what? A 1/4 mile that'll get you kicked off the track and a late-night, red light to red light throw down.

Eh, to each their own.

I’m glad I’m not alone. We drove around the ‘burbs where we live and even on the more rural roads, the fun was over in mere seconds or else you were out of pavement. At least straight pavement! Don’t get me wrong, I loves me some HP but the city ain’t the place for 707 of it!

Did you notice if the key was black or red?

Black is "limited" to 500hp Red is the full 707hp at least it was based on a 2015.

Would be fun either way

This was the unruly beast. Those tires and wheels almost look like they’re on the wrong car.

I'm driving 775 whp on stock SS rims/tires and 3.91 gears. Not a problem at all. She also has a big cam, so driving through parking lots and traffic jams takes a little getting used to.

I don't dump the clutch from a standstill or turn off traction control, but she'll scratch 3rd and 4th gear. LOL!!

How long have you had this kind of power? If a while, am I right that if you’re burnin’ that kind of coal the traction control is working the brakes harder?

interesting post..I am only 580 at crank, plenty for 0-45MPH. I would like more for that 45MPH & up. So I am saving up for mods, but only targeting another 125 at crank.

I agree that at somepoint (700hp & up), unless you have drag radials, it is just wasted HP at digs from a stop or low speed roll. But since I do not have a 700rwhp car, who am I to say it is too much..
