Fixed Chains, Now Knocking

Hey Guys,

So I got my chains replaced costing me total 1750 from GM.

I never had a knocking noise before the service, but now my motor is knocking. So I test drove it and brought it back to them. They said they would diagnose it.

Unfortunately they just called me and said that they would need to tear down the motor another 6-12 hours at $140 labour just to figure out the knock

Not sure what to do.
I didn't ask them to diagnose the car before I did the service since I knew it was the chains.
The CEL is gone and the power is back, the motor is just knocking really loud

Not sure what to do now

Sorry to hear about that man but I can say I've been there and know exactly what you're going through. You have three choices really.
First Choice, let the dealer tear into the motor and diagnose the knock (btw shouldnt take 6-12hrs) and allow them to repair the knock which I believe the repair comes with a 1year/12,000mile warranty.
Second Choice, Buy a crate motor through GM (This is what I did) and allow the dealer to replace the motor completely which comes with a 3year/100,000 mile warranty.
Third Choice, find a reputable engine build shop in your area that can do the V6 work (cheapest option) no added warranty

General Crate motor Cost without labor: $4,399.97

Even the motor repair by the dealer is upwards of $3k

Man what a waste of $1800 on the chains.

What I don't get is that there was no knock like this when I brought it in and now its a loud knock.

Can it be something simple like sparkplugs or bad fuel?

With a spark plug issue you would get a misfire not really a knocking noise. The V6 already recommends bad gas so I'm not sure that would be the issue either.

Yea man I have no cel, engine runs smooth, full power. Just a loud audible knock when it revs above 2000rpm. But I cant hear it when its idling.

What's the oil pressure when the knocking occurs? I've seen poorly trained technicians leave the opening for the oil pan uncovered once the front cover is removed. When they go to clean the old RTV off the engine block it drops down into the oil pan and eventually clogs the oil pickup screen. Hopefully its not the case, but the description sounds very familiar.

Great... this is exactly where I didn't want to be.

I don't understand how they want me to pay for the teardown when it didn't have knock before?

Dealer is adamant on me paying for the tear down to diagnose

Any suggestions guys? Do I take the car back or do I get them to do the teardown at my cost and than pay for the repair?

At this point. I would try to negotiate a deal on a new crate engine. I have 2011 v6 and i am scared this will happen to me soon. I have been thinking of selling my baby and getting a 2010-2010 GTI. VW cost more to maintain, but they last forever. Vw really stands behind their product. I just can't seem to let silver fox go.

Check the oil level. I'm changing out an LLT with a new crate engine right now. No real warning just seemed to start knocking and then seized up. No oil in crankcase. I feel bad for you. It is however expensive no matter which way you go. We are doing the labor ourselves so saving that portion. But it's hours and hours of work even with the right tools and facility.
