notchy shifter

I ordered my 2012 2SS with a Hurst short throw shifter. It's really notchy and not smooth at all. Would changing the shifter to a different brand, solve this issue? Or, is it just the nature of the beast with the six speed?

Hi, the only full shifter replacement I am aware of that is available is the MGW. It is my understanding that all others are just a "stick". I did my MGW install myself and had the opportunity, with the help of a friend's lift, to see how the shifter ties into the transmission. It is a well built piece of hardware. I really like the feel of this shifter. The shorter throw reminds me of my old M-22 that I had in my 1967 Firebird. My stock shifter went from what I would call "sloppy" to "smooth" with the MGW. There are some good threads on here with install info.

I see we both have 45th's. Mine is a V6 and that you have the V8. So different transmission and the MGW is built a little different to link up, basically the same hardware inside so there should be no worries. I put dynamat underneath on the tunnel after installing the MGW and some more in the cabin by the shifter prior to putting in their noise deadening material. Also, I used the stock shift knob to keep with the 45th style. I see you have the SS ball knob, looks good.

I don't think a shifter change will fix your notchiness, the reason I say that is the shifter is just a stick and ball on a pivot now tightening the stocker could help, I ordered a Pegasus Machine poly billet rear mount and it seemed to help a lot and for less than a hundred bucks it beats a aftermarket 300.00 shifter.

What do you mean by "help a lot" .... reduce notchyness, slop, NVH ?

Why not try the ZL1 shifter upgrade?

Seemed to fix some the notchiness and slop and didn't really get a increase or decrease in NVH, it just feels more positive. I have a 2010 with a factory Hurst installed just not factory installed.

I have run 3 different shifters on my 2010. stock, MGW, and GM factory Hurst. The shifter change will not help. It is a fluid change that makes the most difference.

Get 4 quarts of Mobil 1 SYNTHETIC ATF (be sure to buy the one designed for OLDER vehicles that originally used Dexron 3 ATF).

Drain fluid then fill with a funnel and 4 feet of rubber hose from the top of the engine compartment. Cheap and easy.
