Squirrelly Rear end
Why does my 2016 2SS hop sideways when going over expansion joints on the freeway?
My shocks have 11K on them, tires are still ok.

hmmm...how bad are the expansion joints? Did you go over same joints when car was new and it didn't do it?
I know that when I'm accelerating pretty good, there are a couple spots around my hood that the road is buckled a little and I hop, but not sideways.

maybe it feels sideways because you're not used to the feeling of a rear limited slip + traction control working on one or the other rear tire (especially assuming the expansion isn't run over at a perfect perpendicular angle).
usually that kind of sideways movement feeling comes from driving in truck grooves on asphalt (common on the east coast) with wide tires. |

There is a "bump" (not big) on the highway I use daily. When I travel over it around 80mph, the car hops a bit and the traction light flashes. It doesn't actually go sideways but does feel like it hops to one side, made me nervous the first time it happened. Thats the only time I have had something similar. I haven't had it happen on an expansion joint, the bump i deal with is a crappy patch job by the road crew.

What you're describing is what I've been living with for 10 years driving my 2007 Mustang GT with their solid/live axle. The rear end will hop out to the side when hitting a bump /expansion joint while in a corner. It's a little unnerving but you get used to it. That being said...I've noticed this too....sometimes. But only now 'n then. But with IRS it shouldn't happen, at least I wouldn't think so.
FYI...I have my suspension in Tour mode. I've never had the traction light come on though.

^ The traction light comes on pretty easy in tour mode for me. Especially punching it at 80 mph.

why's that? That does NOT sound good. Or are you boosted and just messing with us?

I have this happen often where I live, going around an exit from the Commodore Barry bridge onto I-95 southbound. Mildly annoying.
More annoying is that after the bump, right about where I want to accelerate and merge with traffic, about every other time the power gets cut, almost like I hit the rev limiter. Push the gas, nothing happens. Push it more, still nothing. Only when I release the gas pedal and wait a moment does it reset itself and I get power back. Now THAT is frustrating! Should probably watch for the TC light coming on next time, it's the only explanation which makes sense. |

Maybe dumping the clutch at 80.

I am going to assume, one tire hits the joint before the other and pulling. Just a guess.

I haven't noticed my SS hopping to the side when hitting bumps. However, I have experienced hitting a bump on the highway that threw my car out of gear.

Wide metal expansion joints can be very low traction surfaces. I haven't experienced an issue in my Camaro but my '87 Wrangler will sometimes step out on a wide metal expansion joint if I'm not coasting across the joint.
