Hill Assist on the A8

Tonight, I had to stop on a hill (bridge) for the first time and the Hill Assist light came on. Why does the A8 have/need this? I live in Florida, so we don't have many hills other than our bridges to notice this.

it might come in handy with a looser converter.

I guess I understand needing it to help prevent rolling when clutching a manual from a stop, but have always thought of an automatic as not needing that since I have always considered an automatic always engaged.

There are plenty of hilly stops where I live. Some would have significant roll if it weren't for the hill assist. With that said, my 2010 auto Camaro didn't have hill assist but it also wouldn't roll on any of the same hills my 2016 will if I let hill assist fade off.

My driveway has a borderline crazy incline. If you had to stop for any reason before the top, my other car would roll back big time or lose traction trying to go forward, unless you use both feet and do essentially what this car does for you automatically. One of the roads near my house has a 14% grade. I love the hill assist, even with the A8.
