So how $&%$!* am I? Help, See Pic...

By no means am I a uber gear head. I am however pretty mechanical and do basic maintenance on my vehicles. I have changed the oil in my V6 Lt about ten times and have roughly 30k on it. I was removing the upper oil filter housing and the cast nut broke off. This was not over torqued and I tightened to 20NM on every change. The nut literally broke off in a peculiarly pathetic way. New upper housing ready to pick up from GM parts tonight. I can't find a nice (non AL) stronger aftermarket upper oil filter housing anywhere online. Soooo.....how do I get the old filter cap off without surgery? Award winning photography attached.....

um are ya still under warranty? If so wouldn't they come get it and flatbed it to the dealership and fix it under the warranty?
If not I think your title said it all, buddy. Good luck with that!

He can try to get them to fix it, but my guess is they will say he overtightened it and it's his fault.

That will NOT be covered under warranty. He did it. Now if the dealer was changing the oil and did it then different story.

The strap wrench might work, however there isn't much room in there.....

NOW. since you have the new housing (cap), what you could do, and what I would try, seeing as how the hole is oblong and not round, I wound find something like a combination wrench (the open end) that will fit in the hole, and use another wrench to turn it.

oh and btw Mike..... Welcome to our happy little corner of the net, and to Camaro5. There is a BIG fridge on the back porch with anything you can think of in it...help yourself...of course only take what you can LEGALLY have. Make yourself at home on one of the big fluffy couches, kick your shoes off, put your feet up on one of the tables, yes we are allowed to do that, mom's, wive's, husbands and boyfriends here don't care....and take it easy.

oh...btw....every once in a while a food fight breaks out...so you may not want to wear nice clothes here.

Welcome!!

That's a nice one. Real nice. Good luck getting it fixed up! I still think that, no matter how hard it was torqued, the casing wouldn't just rip apart like that. That was alotta force.
