Can Anyone explain what happened here?

Can anyone explain why these don't line up for my rear license plate? Did GM think that US license plate were getting wider in 2014? Maybe my 2014 SS was meant to be sold outside of the US?

Those are designed for the tag to be attached with a clothes hanger

So the dealer didn't try to put their own plate or license plate frame on? That is piss poor! I would hate to go back and ask them to drill the correct holes, unless you can watch them!

Those are the holes for the foreign market. They have real wide skinny plates.

Like Droptopscott said the wrong holes were drilled...

I had the same issue. Guys from the dealer trying to put the plate on said they forgot to bring the right screwdriver (lying SOB) and left the plate in the rear window (car was delivered to me). Rather than take it in and have the chance of someone doing even more wrong I picked up a plastic plate from Autozone (maybe Advanced) that was made to be a buffer between the plate and the car. I mounted that to the extra wide holes and then put my plate on that. It sticks out a little bit but it is not really noticeable until you stand right next to the car.

There are different pre- moulded spots in the bumper/valance to drill out. Looks like whoever was assigned to put the inserts in for the license plate screws installed at the wrong spot.

Don't feel bad; my 14 was done the same way and a second drilling was done to correct it.
The plate covers it so I wasn't that concerned.

I know it sucks but wouldn't it make more sense to just drill holes in the license plate instead of the car itself? Or do what Valkyrja suggested with the plastic spacer.
