Agreed, and you don't see a lot of wheel spin where he is chasing the back end of the car around. 1LE has less power than z28, and it can't keep up in the higher speed portions of the track.

Not trying to be negative but I just wonder that if Jim Mero had been behind the wheel it might have been a cople of seconds faster. There was a lot of understeer. Although I gotta admit it didn't seem to hurt the momentum of the car because he was on it, driving at 10/10ths.

The new ZL1 is very impressive to say the least.

Ford never releases ring times.

and all the GTR times?

I don't know if its that impressive , i mean last gen corvettes far smoke it? , they didn't run c7 z51 , or z06?

I think I expected better times, and I actually think the 1LE would out do it because it can use all of its power.
That list is not comprehensive, but it is illustrative.

The C7s don't have any times because there was a temporary restriction on manufacturers publishing hotlaps for a little while, unfortunately that pretty much matched the C7 Stingray & Z06 development period. So GM was never able to publish a time.

And last gen Corvettes smoking it? The ZR1 was the absolute biggest beast that GM has ever unleashed on a road course. It made similar power, with about 600 lbs less weigh, bigger carbon ceramic brakes & more tire. It was a whopping 3 seconds faster in its original form. Then with a performance package (that included tires that were practically racing slicks), the Z06 is a mere 7 seconds faster around the 'ring while the ZR1 was about 10 seconds ahead of the new ZL1. Remember, that was a $120k+ car that, to this day, has managed to post the fastest 'ring time of ANY car for GM. Granted, there is no C7 Z06/Z07 time ... but still. The fact that the new ZL1 is closer in performance to the ultimate Corvette from 5 years ago than its own predecessor (of the same time period) should be pretty impressive.

The argument that the 1LE would be quicker because it can use 'all its power' is nonsense. Using that logic, the V6 1LE would be even quicker around a road course than the SS 1LE. Since it has less power, it gets to use 'all of it' more often. Taken to its conclusion, the fastest cars in the world should all have the least hp while the slow ones have the most. And yet, the opposite is true because thats how physics works.

It also means that the time differences need to be scaled up.

Anything on that track within 3.5 seconds of each other is of comparable performance.

Here are some historical times to chew on.

7:12.13 - 2010 Dodge Viper ACR
7:19.63 - 2012 Chevy Corvette ZR1(sport Cup)
7:22.68 - 2012 Chevy Corvette Z06
7:24.44 - 2008 Pagani Zonda F
7:25.21 - 2010 Ferarri Enzo
7:26.40 - 2009 Chevy Corvette ZR1 (stock tires)
7:28.00 - 2016 Lamborghini Huracán
7:29.60 - 2017 Chevy Camaro ZL1
7:32.00 - Porsche 911 GT2
7:32.92 - Ferarri 458 Italia
7:33.33 - 2010 Porsche 911 GT3 RS
7:33.55 - 2008 Koenigsegg CCX
7:35.00 - 2015 McLaren 650S Spider
7:35.00 - Mercedes AMG GT S
7:37.40 - 2014 Chevy Camaro Z/28
7:80.00 - Lamborghini Gallardo LP570-4 Superleggara
7:38.00 - 2010 Lexus LFA
7:40.00 - 2005 Bugatti Veyron 16.4
7:41.27 - 2012 Chevy Camaro ZL1

Also worth noting...the Corvette ZR1 hit a top speed of 178 on the back straight of the 'Ring. The Z/28 hit 160, and the last-gen ZL1 hit 168......The new ZL1 reached 180.
Nice little tidbit of information you have there.

I didn't make a comprehensive list, and missed the BMW. Honestly, there are so many GTR times, I can't figure them all. Some from magazines, some from Manufacturer...different configurations. And I, personally, can't stand the car...so when I had originally written this post as a passing thought in the ZL1 Nurburgring time thread...I left them out.

The SS/1LE won't be able to touch this time. The Nordschleife is a FAST track. The horsepower makes a huge difference, and the A10 performed like a super-star....I don't know why you seem to think the ZL1 couldn't use it's power? So not sure how to explain that...appeared to do pretty well to me!

The last-gen Corvettes that were remarkably faster featured R-compound rubber, and about 500 lbs less weight. I should HOPE they're faster.

With that in mind...I wouldn't doubt for a second if a ZL1 with Trofeos, an aero package (see Spy shot wing, etc), and CC brakes (similar setup to those Corvettes) would knock 8-10 seconds off this time.

When you consider that the fastest Camaro to lap the 'Ring was the track-star Z/28, and it posted a 7:37 with all of its 73k worth of race-ready equipment....this is remarkable. This is a luxurious, comfy, DD-capable super-Camaro...and it just posted a supercar-killing Nurburgring time, yet only costs $62k.

....Remember, for a rough estimate of how this thing might do on a "normal track"...pick your favorite car, figure the difference in times on the ring...and divide it by 3...

EDIT: So really....GM's fastest car (to date) is a C6 ZR1/Z07...at 7:19...10 seconds off the new ZL1...divide by three...and that's a 3 second difference on a "normal" track. A $70,000, R-comp tire, CC brake, 3-second difference.... (And I'll bet it's not nearly as stable and nice to drive!)

I think it all depends on the driver and how often he was driving this course.
I have been there several times because itīs only 270 miles away from me but I still have no Idea where the next corner goes. This is one of the most complicated raceways in the world. Believe me, there are corners you cantīt see even 100 feet away.

Maybe they should let other drivers try the ZL1 to get better times
#30 is not bad but I see more potential....
