Short throw shifters, pros & cons?
I never drove a manual with a short throw shifter so looking for some advice. What is good about having it, are there any negatives/cons to having it?
I have a gift card that expires at the end of the month and I can't think of anything I want/need so I am thinking about buying the short throw kit. Is this something that an amateur can install? Russ |

I have the MGW short throw and highly recommend. It provides a tighter quicker feel. You can install this. Getting it on a lift is much easier but plenty have done it on jack stands.

I was wanting one too. Didn't know you had to get under the car. That's a plus to know.

I also have the MGW and I love it. I couldn't be happier. it makes a huge difference. and I did do it with jack stands and it still wasn't bad. I think it took 2-3 hrs.
I did a lot of research before I bought one. I just know the hurst has ALOT of play and a lot of ppl dont recommend that one. that's why you see everyone trying to sell them. im not trying to bash on anyone, that's just the results that I found. |

Russ, I have a Hurst. I know a lot of people complain about them, but I couldn't be happier. I don't beat the living hell out of it daily though. The Delrin bushings wear out when subjected to severe duty.(drag racing). Hurst makes an upgraded bushing kit to help solve this problem.
The shifts are much more precise than the original GM shifter. I have a 2010. Later years came with a Hurst from the factory. It took about an hour to install. I was using a lift though, but could just as easily done it laying down under with jack stands. Good luck, Rich

I've got the Hurst too and like it a Lot.

i have the stock hurst on an SS. My only complaint is it feels very stiff sometimes. Granted this is the first stick shift car that i have owned but every other stick kind of glided into place. i feel like i almost have to force it sometimes. its not too big of a deal just driving casually but when i try and step on it and shift my left hand jerks the wheel slightly because i have to push/pull so hard with my right. Not sure if fits the bushings or what. i do plan on swapping it out eventually though. im tired of popping tendons in my hand when shifting into 2/4/6. it does not feel good. i'm not sure if this is just mine or all of the factory hursts but it almost feels like it clicks in twice in the lower gears. meaning i feel a little resistance and then it will pop into gear.
but again this could just be mine. i havent driven any other m6 camaros with a hurst. |

The Barton short throw shifter has less moving parts and the range is shorter then most and a therty day money back guarenty easy to install

I have a Barton aluminum pistol grip shift handle I would like to keep. I am going to contact Barton to see which short throw unit I need to buy.
Looks like there are no cons to short throw shifter unit. Thanks for the info guys! Russ |

Cons = Zilch
Pros = Many Get the short throw shifter. You wont regret. I have the HURST with white ball 40% reduction. Night and day difference over stock. Some don't like the HURST but I love mine. Zero noise issues and I like that I can feel/hear it click into each gear without question.

Had a Hurst and loved the old school look, but it shifted way too hard, switched to a MGW and it shifts butter smooth and a lot better for racing, Hurst you had to force it in at high rpm and made shifting slow, MGW it seems to just fall into gear and you can shift a lot quicker.
MGW best period, having had the Hurst with white ball, if anyone with a Hurst ever drove a car with a MGW, you would ditch the Hurst quickly, not even in the same league as a MGW. |

I have never heard of MGW, thanks for the letting me know about them. As long as I'm able to keep my Barton pistol grip handle I will be checking MGW out.
I did get an email back from Dave @ Barton telling me which one I should buy so I will be comparing pricing. |
