First and foremost is the safety and security pacjkage. If in an accident and the ai bag deploys help WILL be calls. Now if you are like the people that ride motorcycles without a helmet because "it won't happen to me" then awesome. I hope it doesn't. But I like the assurance.

Second I like the connectivity to my car. Where it is, the status of the tire pressure, oil life, etc.

I like using the OnStar ap to down load directions to my nav system. Easy and convenient.

I like that I can call OnStar and check CELs. Rare but nice to know I have thT ability.

And I'm not a parent but if I were I would LOVE the ability to make sure my kids were driving safely.

That's most of it, but there are more.

But again I'm a bit surprised you can't at least go "yeah I get it, it's just not important to me"
But.....you quote Aldous Huxley in your signature so......you do know he wrote Brave New World right? That book was not an instruction manual

Yes very aware of the message in that work of literature. But that quote also stands in its own.

I simply do not want my driving habits made available for purchase to insurance companies by GM.
This would have to be tested by someone with an onstar subscription. Plug in a device such as dash logic to the obd port. Within a month you should recieve a letter from onstar stating they can't communicate with the car.

Works on the previous gen and other vehicles. Untested on current.

Disconnecting the antenna sounds good, but the transceiver radio is still powered, and even without the antenna plugged in may still be able to transmit and receive some data/signal.

You need to kill the power to the transceiver to kill all active data and signal transmission.

in the 5th gen, the radio was a separate board that could be disconnected. Until someone opens it up (i'll be doing that after work) it's unknown if this is still viable.

If that's the case simply unsolder the crystal from the circuit board.

No crystal, no radio

The trick will not be if the radio can be disabled. Obviously there are ways to do that. It'll be if it can be done without making the unit angry. Disconnecting the radio board in previous units just caused it to behave like it wasn't getting a signal. No harm no foul. Not sure what other methods of disabling it (if disconnecting is not possible) will have on the unit. Basically, the point is not to have it start throwing codes.

Very true.

Sounds like we still may need the Helms manual.

It's unlikely the helms manual would help any since the onstar unit is not servicable. the manual would just show you how to remove the whole unit and install it. Not open it up or play with the components. Which is what we are talking about doing.

Right I understand what you're trying to do. I just thought the Helms might have at least a block diagram of the circuit boards inside the OnStar module.

Someone somewhere at OnStar has the schematic for the module.

Call them and ask for their tech support or engineering department. Give them the serial number of your module and ask for the schematic. Worst they can say is no, which they probably will.

Completely opposite from the 1980s and 90s when you could get the schematic from Delco for a head unit. I've replaced output amplifier ICs, loading gears on cassette decks and lasers on CD players on Delco head units. Back in my car-fi repair and install days.
