Lightbulb In-Car Cashless Gas Station Payments!

This is what Camaro needs, but a little more automated than this:

Jaguar and Shell Partnership Lets UK Drivers Use Apple Pay to Pay for Fuel Inside Car
https://www.macrumors.com/2017/02/15...l-partnership/

However, on second thought, you still have to get out of your car to pump gas, so this saves only part of the hassle. lol

It doesn't really get into "how it works" but not seeing anything that prevents it from being easily adopted. Probably more work on the gas station side than anything. Unless they are using a NFC on the car itself to tell them pump it's paid. But like you said if I have to get out of the car to pump anyway, why not just touch my phone against the NFC on the pump to pay.

I have yet to see a gas station that even offers NFC type payments or one that would allow Samsung Pay to work with a magnetic strip, even the newer stations by me with the newest pumps. This is probably years away.

I wonder if anyone has come up with an automated gasoline fill-up technology yet?!

Yep but I see some that have a proprietary "pass" type that you just touch to the pump. That has to be using NFC tech. In either case adding NFC to pumps will catch on eventually as mobile device payment becomes more mainstream. Right now it's more of a format war and no one is really jumping on the bandwagon wholesale.

The amount of tech needed and standardization among the car and gas companies probably means this is a pipe dream. We'll likely be rid of fossil fuels for cars by then. Maybe it will catch on for hydrogen.

I've seen a human-less pumping station. But, it was for city buses. Which are all exactly the same. And even then, it had lasers for lining up the nozzle, a plethora of sensors to avoid problems, and a big gantry to support the nozzle and such. And it required the driver to park in a specific place with 1 sqft margin of error.

No way that that system could handle different cars. And, even more of a reason it'll never work, no way that the average driver (who has the driving IQ of a tomato) could properly park their car like that.

We have a capless fuel gate, just remove your fuel door and ask Shell to install a robo-snake that guide the nozzle into the gate for you. Then another arm can drop down for you to tap your phone on to pay for the fuel.

Tesla already made the snake prototype. Just adapt it to the existing pumps.

I think they should add the red light timer that Audi added to the new RS3. Only some cities have lights that support it (Las Vegas does for example), but it looks awesome!
