Camaro 5th gen swap with lt1?
Ive seen the new 6th gen camaros killing the game out there. Ive seen camaros 5gen (ls3)getting smoked by the new camaro LT1. People say its the weight advantage over the previous camaro. But i think its not really that, but it has to do with the new LT1 engines direct injection (i know it has around 30 extra horses too). What do you guys think? Is it worth doing the swap? I basically need to have 500 crank horses just to keep up with the new camaro. I really want to see your opinion guys

A nice cam with boltons should get you around 500 crank HP for much cheaper than an engine swap.

There's more to it than just an engine. The 6th gen Camaro has the many advantages over the 5th; weight reduction, extra horsepower, 2-4 extra gears (in an automatic SS and ZL1). While I'm not saying don't do it, the issue is going to be cost. Sure it can be done, anything can be done with enough money, but it just plain isn't worth it IMO. If you're that worried about the 6th gen beating you, go buy one and trade your 5th gen in. I've driven both, and while I'm not wildly modified, I don't think that a 6th gen is much if any faster than my car is now. Yes I am comparing stock to modified, but my car is also 8 years older.

For the price of the LT1 engine alone, you can supercharge yours and have a lot more power. You would still have to get it installed and probably get new wiring harnesses and computers so no telling how much that would cost as well.

If that is your goal, then trade yours in for a 6th.

Seriously you must have no idea how much a new LT1 would cost to have installed. Have a Supercharger installed for $6K-$8K or go with Nitrous for about $1000. |

Trade it in...best decision I ever made. Went from fat and slow, to lean and fast !

OP: Yes, it is the difference in weight that gives the 6th gen its performance. Power difference between LS3 and LT1 is 29 horses, so if you add long tubes to a 5th gen does it beat a 6th gen? Nope.

Also skipping over the fact that there have been a decent amount of stock LT1's blow up within 20,000-30,000 miles
Modify your LS3 and upgrade the oil pump for safe keeping. A cam swap runs around 2-3K and you'll be making nearly 500 wheel

Another detail being left out in the responses is the dramatically better chassis and suspension that the 6th gen has. It's a completely different car.
Still, for less than the price of a swap, you can do all the mods listed above and improve the suspension on a 5th gen to hang with or smoke any stock 6th Gen SS. Scott

You will save big bucks and have a nicer looking car if you keep your 5th gen. Hopefully it is a manual as the auto robs lots of HP. Long tube headers, exhaust, tune, and coilovers will get you there on a manual. You can always continue with lightened underdrive pulleys, cam, light driveshaft, lighter flywheel, lighter wheels (HRE) and these cars LOVE methanol injection. Easy to install that too and easy to meter. You can have a much more aggressive tune with methanol. I do appreciate the improved performance of the 6th gen, but it is not feel like a big difference to me. I think the No. 1 upgrade needed for the 5th gen is suspension. If you are racing everyone, just get a used ZL1 for the same price as the 6th gen and you will not be very concerned about that 6th gen anymore.

The OP lives in California. He can't legally modify the engine with much. No long tube headers, no hi-flow cats, no cams, no intake manifolds and throttle bodies. But he can put a E-force blower on it.
Just a point...there'll always be someone with a faster/quicker car out there. Outside of an all out drag car, you'll never beat a AWD Tesla or AWD Nissan GT-R in a stoplight grand prix, and maybe not in a 1/4 mile. Some 20 year old with an old POS AWD Subaru turbo WRX and some mods will leave you at the light wondering what happened. You'll either get past trying to be the fastest car around or you'll spend all your money chasing it and be in some trouble with the law or worse.
