Patching a Tire

So i get in my car this morning, and see that my passenger front tire is at 3PSI, I turn the wheel and get out of the car.... sure enough a screw in the tire.

I have 1100 miles on the car, and didn't get any type of road hazard warranty. What is everyone's opinion on just getting the tire patched? I called a few places and some wont do it at all, one place advised against it. and one place ( a goodyear center ) said bring it by, and we'll patch it.

so what should I do? Take the free patch from goodyear, or buy a new tire for 345.00 ?

Patch it, if it's in the center tread. Virtually all tire manufactures allow one patch in the center.

Everyone, including dealers, either can't patch it, Or want you to buy a new tire.

I've had plenty of patches in tires and have never had an issue, but I've also never had these F1 run flats before. The dealer said they wont patch them, because that would void the speed rating on them ?

I don't track my car so I don't care about the speed rating. If you track the car, it might be another story.

The stock tires can be patched. I had a nail in my front driver tire at 2k miles. I patched it at Discount Tire, made it a "spare", and put a new one on as peace of mind.

This just happened to me last weekend. I went to a local dealer on Monday and they wanted to put a new tire on the car for $315. The next day I went to a tire shop and they patched it for $18.

From what information I could find, patching it will be fine as long as the sidewall isn't damaged. If it fails again, then I'll buy a new tire.

My brother just went through this on his 2016 2SS. Tire never went below 30 pounds, slow leak. After the dealer refused to patch he read on the Goodyear site that they can be patched as long as the hole is in the tread area. He took the car to Goodyear, they removed the tire from the wheel to check for damage, then patched from the "inside", 35.00 Web site indicated it should be free if in the first 2 32nds of wear but he didn't argue, lots cheaper than a tire.

Agree. The problem with run-flats is you are on borrowed time driving on the sidewalls once the pressure drops. Once the sidewalls crumble you have trash and it's not worth patching. They say 50 miles. Probably worth carrying a small compressor so you can keep the pressure up if you are lucky enough to get a slow leak. Then you are good for hundreds of miles.

Ok, this is my first time with run-flats so not sure . . .
I always keep a compressor and a tire plug kit in my vehicles, used quite a bit and works great. (NOT the rubber plugs, but the rawhide/glue impregnated type).

Puncture hole must be on the flat contact part of the tread only. And if this was a tire that saw the track - maybe a patch.

Yup I read this too. I drove it, maybe, a total of 15 miles over a day and a half and never got over 45 mph, so I'm confident my tire is still ok. Plus I stopped and put air in it 3x during that time. But yes, I've read the tire sidewall will deteriorate quickly and more so if they get hot while your driving.

Got a compressor and a plug kit in the trunk. Luckily, haven't had to use it yet.

I had run flats on Vettes before, and I always carried a plug kit and compressor.

I probably plugged 4-5 tires ( tread area only ) and drove 1000s of miles with no issue. I was not tracking, but commuting across the desert at, let's say, 3 digit speeds with no problem.

Plug it. It's completely safe. Ya gotta luv the "You can't repair run flats" BS that some places try to pull.

I agree with everyone else. I've patched/plugged many tires and never had an issue.
