Washington Nationals star Jayson Werth is set to spend five days in jail after pleading guilty to a charge of reckless driving for an incident over the summer.

Justin Jouvenal of The Washington Post has the report:

Jouvenal later shared more details on Werth's sentence and comments from the player's attorney:

Werth, who attended Thursday's hearing, will serve his sentence on weekends so he can continue rehabilitation following shoulder surgery during the week and training for the upcoming season. Circuit Court Judge Randy L. Bellows said such latitude was unusual for someone caught driving more than 100 mph on the Beltway but ultimately agreed to it.

"He is very involved in community," Werth's attorney, Michael Pritchard, told the judge. "This was an aberration."

Werth was originally sentenced to 10 days in prison, a 170-day suspended sentence and the loss of his driver's license in December, per Pete Kerzel of MASN Sports. Werth was sentenced after being pulled over for driving 105 mph in a 55-mph zone on Interstate 495 in Fairfax County, Virginia, in July.

However, following the plea deal, Werth's license will only be suspended for 30 days, per Jouvenal.

It remains unclear whether the Nationals will take any disciplinary action against Werth. The outfielder was a vital member of the National League East-winning Nats last season, hitting .292 with 16 home runs, 82 RBI and 85 runs scored.

It's hard to imagine the team wouldn't discipline Werth in some manner given the nature of his transgressions and his status as a role model.

I bet , Seems like Werth got hammered pretty hard for this , 5 days in jail seems a bit extreme ? Did you have to do any time for that?

VA laws are strange they don't charge you with speeding rather reckless driving which in that state is punishable by jail time. I used to have to drive through VA all the time and drove like a granny. My buddy got nailed in VA flexing his camaro but I'm not sure what the outcome was.

Jail time for speeding is ridiculous unless your involved in an accident.

I have seen drunk drivers get probation after killing someone:(

My view of reckless driving is weaving in and out of traffic (cutting off) posing a problem to other drivers. Speed in itself isn't reckless. If he was all alone on the road just cruising that's not reckless.

Well, the law doesn't have to make sense, although I'd agree, the laws re: driving are pretty out of whack

+1, I never heard of such a thing , This country just loves to lock up people , I guess it doesnt matter if your rich or poor , Got to keep locking up tax paying citizens, Just once I would love to see our politicians actually go through the law books ,and toss out all these outdated , or unfair laws and leave us alone ,

Laws are made by politicians...enough said about that.

I just think this thread is funny in that last week a young man member of the forum asked for help in knowing what to do as result of speeding ticket and he was severely torched and flamed by many here attacking his character with each word. Where are they now.

They only make an example out of a few and never their friends.

Just look at the 2008 economic meltdown, how many of the those Wall Street wizards got jail time....zero.

They didn't even get brought to trial

They are polishing their glass houses and picking out new shiny stones to throw, so they can pretend they never did anything wrong.
