I admit to being naīve on this issue. I thought factory stripes would be painted. So what is the life expectancy of the vinyl? How long before the edges start chipping?

depends on how you treat them. if you keep them clean, coated with some kind of UV protection, and garage it, you might be looking at 7-10 years easily. if you keep it in the sun all the time, 2-3 years tops.
I keep mine out, so I expect to replace mine within the next two years. I'm probably going to wrap my entire car satin black, with some gloss black rally stripes. subtle yet sexy.

I have the factory applied black rally strips. Waxing them has not been a problem as they are glossy and take the wax well.

The stripes on my 45th were driven through 3 upstate NY winters and 36,000 miles and looked as good when I traded it in as they did the day I picked it up. Always used Meguiars synthetic wax on them. You do have to put in a little extra work to keep the wax out of the edges though but it is no big deal.
I did not get the rallye stripes on my 6th gen because they no longer have the quarter inch surround that they have always had. Without that surround stripe, the main stripe, to me, is not a Camaro stripe. Now it just looks like the plain stripes that everyone else has.
This is just my opinion.

I have a hyper blue SS and opted for the stripes on mine. I LOVE them.

Get Rally stripes.
But get them painted on.
And make sure they do them right. That is, stopping them on the top of the front nose cone, not on the top of the bumper. And include the thinner stripe around the big stripes.

They should look like this:

And they don't go on the roof.
And the rear ones need to bend over the trunk lid just a little bit.

I haven't done much in the way of detailing with my car yet. But my plan is to tape the edges of the stripes when polishing the paint. The stripes have a gloss to them, so i'll probably hit them with a paint sealant and wax.
Beautiful car! If I were to go for a 2SS it would be exactly like yours!

Mine looks just like yours but with black bowtie! Thumbs up brother!

And Techn9cian805 said leaving it in the sun all the time = 2-3 years before chipping, and that doesn't have to be true at all.

My Trans Am sat in the sun for 4 years, including snow, and they look no worse for the wear. Honestly looks as good as the day they were put on (aftermarket of course).

that's an estimate based on minimal care, based on my past experience with 3M decals on my hoopty in sunny drought-stricken Cali weather

My vote, no stripes. Don't like stripes at all, love the clean look of the 6th gen. Just my opinon.
