Maybe because the auto doesn't come with one?

The Autos do not have a tranny dipstick.

MeanV8, if you are going to get a dipstick, I recommend you get a factory quality like design with good accuracy, the Jannetty Racing (JRE) 6L80 dipstick & tube kit. That is what many of us run and it is much cheaper. They look like an OEM piece.

Might be a dumb question.. but is there anyway to install the kit without dropping the trans?

That is the reason I was leaning toward the B&M dipstick and it looks like a quality piece. Looking for opinions on it not the Jannetty one, or the "this is Best because it's what I have"

Uh! If I had a dipstick I wouldn't spend money to get another one.

The transmission does not have to be dropped for this install.

You just have to get under the car and remove the fluid fill plug that is on the passenger side of the trans just above the pan. The end of the dipstick tube goes into where the plug was and the bracket for the fill tube bolts to the bellhousing using an existing and easily reachable bellhousing bolt.

It is a fairly simple install as long as you have ramps, a good floor jack, or access to a lift.

The thread will get some more responses about the few options you have. I know there are quite a few of us with the JRE version and also the B&M. I think there is another as well.

The 6l80e fluid level can be checked without a dipstick. It has a fluid level drain plug and also a fill plug. You have to get the transmission to the proper temperature range and make sure vehicle is level, then when the fluid level plug is pulled, if fluid is coming out it you let it drain until it stops then put the plug in... it is then full. If none comes out you add fluid until some starts coming out of that hole. But overall, it is a pain in the ass compared to a dipstick. Since with the dipstick you can also add fluid. But yeah, it was kind of a stupid decision to make these cars without one. It just lends to negligence of proper maintenance.

I second this. I have one on my car. I forget what I paid for it I feel like it’s less than 170.

I don't get it, why not consider the JRE? You don't have to drop the tranny, it costs less than the B&M, is a quality piece and does the job. Hammdo, a regular on here actually went from the B&M to the JRE and said "NO LEAKS and this works 100x better than the previous setup (B&M)"

I agree. The JRE version is about as close to stock as you could get if we had one from the factory. There really is no reason to go with another unless you like paying more for a name brand.
