New Jack=Spend my money!!
Hi all, first post so bear with me. Got a stock 2010 LS3 in inferno orange. Would like to do a CAI and exhaust. Looking at Cold Air Inductions for my CAI. But i'm stuck on were to start with my exhaust. Some people start with the headers and some start with the cat back. Since i can't do both due to $$$$ all at once, which one should i start with? Thanks for the input.

Usually people who install headers will also have the car tuned for the most beneficial power.

headers will get more power out of the engine.
headers with stock exhaust sounds great too. |

I started with the back and went forward. If I had to do it again, I probably still would have done it that way simply because the previous owner put awful mufflers on that droned horribly. If I had a stock car and was modding, knowing what I know now, I probably would have started from the front, but it is very appealing to get the stock catback out so if I didn't know better, like this time, I would have done the same thing I did this time. My main drive was $$ as well. Starting with a catback system was the most cost effective way to wake up the sound of the car, but headers are definitely a sound and power wake up. The primary drawback is that you really should get a tune when you install headers.

Start with headers and HFC/or no cats with stock mufflers. You can get a diablo custom tune and you can sell it after if you sell the car or go deeper into modding. Even with no tune its fine, you just get a CEL.

Definitely start with the headers and work your way backwards, all the noise starts up FRONT.
Keep the stock exhaust for now... see how you like it, I swear that everyone who has the Long Tube Headers (not shorty) set up with stock exhaust express that this is how the car should've came from the factory! It's very tame and definitely not too noisy, but it has plenty of OOMPH in it when you want it to. See how you like it, if you're like the rest of us then a catback exhaust system is the next way to go. There are plenty of systems to choose from as far as catbacks go, none of them offer more power than others, it's all about what you want out of the sound. Deep and throaty? Loud and wake the dead kind of sound? Old school muscle car sounding? Lots of set ups to choose from. |

Kooks long tubes, resonated x-pipe, npp mufflers is my end goal. Right now all I need is the resonated x-pipe. Car has long tubes and npp mufflers already and it sounds really, really good, it's just a tad loud. the sound has grown on me though, after the cam install lol.
Start on the headers and work towards the back. A lot of people like the long tubes with HF cats and whichever muffler, seems to be popular. Florida doesn't have emissions tests like other states, so I don't run cats, and won't until required to

I got MagnaFlow axle-back first, which is just a muffler delete with nice 6" tips. Then I did long-tubes, cat delete, and MagnaFlow x-pipe all at once. I did it in that order because I do all my work myself and I wanted to work up the confidence to do the headers. :P

all the info is great thx all. Looking at obx headers, won't break the bank either. New York is kinda screwy when it comes to emissions inspections, will putting headers on mess with it when i get it inspected??

Since it's an LS3 you don't REALLY need a catback, I'd go with an axle back and texas speed headers, those two together will be about the price of a catback. Maybe even a little less. Borla S type or magnaflow are really nice axlebacks, if you want rediculous like I did, go with Borla Atak or Corsa
