What's a Sports Car?

I've been reading different threads on this forum and reading different articles about what a sports car really is. Everyone has a slightly different definition, but I thought the Road and Track definition was pretty interesting

"In the postwar era, a "sports car" was any car that seated two, had a soft top, and could be used for competition."

What do you guys think?

that's a good description in the immediate post-war era. But I think it would need to be expanded today. Or maybe simpler ".. a car that seats two" (I think that is how the USA insurance companies see it).

I agree. These days the soft top is usually an option rather than the only way a car comes. There are only a few soft top only cars out there these days.

I think my car qualifies! The question is...do Camaros count because we all know no-one really uses the back seats.

So ok lets see:

1) Muscle car is an American term used to refer to a variety of high-performance automobiles. The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines muscle cars as "any of a group of American-made 2-door sports coupes with powerful engines designed for high-performance driving."

2) A sports car is a small, usually two seater, two door automobile designed for spirited performance and nimble handling.

3) A performance car is an automobile that is designed and constructed specifically for speed. The design and construction of a performance car involves not only providing a capable power train but also providing the handling and braking systems to support it.

4) A race car is a type of automobile that is designed or modified to be used in contests of speed with other vehicles. Some race cars are specifically designed from the ground up for this purpose, though others are stock vehicles that have been modified to varying degrees.

I think a Camaro would be more of a performance/muscle car than a race car.

I did read this article too this weekend...I don't agree with him. Nowadays '' true'' ''traditional'' sport car that are used in motorsport or competition comes with a roof... even F1 is getting one in a very short term.

To me sport car has lost that definition. And although the author is trying to convince the world about the origin of the appellation, it's not valid anymore. For god sake even the Toyota Camry is the official Daytona Pace car...so anything that's remotely sporty of used in a sporting event is a sport car...even the Guy that runs a Toyata Tercel fully cage in his local Chumpcar race event.

Now the real question is how should we call 2 door coupe?
A Corvette!!
