In North Dakota it is not legal to leave your car running while refueling

My question is.....am I doing any harm to this direct-injection engine by refueling with the engine on? I haven't had a warning light yet(11,000 miles). And does the SS come without a fuelcap so that it can be quickly refueled in competition situations? And if that's not why.....why is there no fuelcap? Thank you for your responses to the questions.
The simple answer is, no you won't harm anything by leaving it running while re-fueling.

Is it possibly illegal by law or prohibited by the gas station? that's for you to check where you are.

Is it 'safe' , again that's for you to decide on your own after seeing the various warnings.

It's that simple. Do as YOU please.

I didn't realize this was such a hotly contested issue. Just make sure to refill before you drop below 7/8 of a tank and you--and your fuel pump--will be fine.

It's also legal to shoot an Indian on horseback, if you are in a covered wagon, in ND.

Many laws are based upon outdated reasoning, questionable science, or emotion.

Made my day!

But it is true! All cars entering the city limits must first sound their horn to warn the horses of their arrival, in Lawrence, Kansas... There are no stables or horses in the city limits...

It's not safe, exposes the vehicle to theft and besides it wastes fuel. The only reason to do it is if the car is not certain to start after a 5 minute break.

Signs in most station tell you to turn off your engine while fueling your car. Do you think someone came up with this requirement/law just to piss you off? What if something does happen? Maybe you're a "super hero", but what about the innocent people around you? I figure common sense would take over at some point, but I guess not.

You're standing next to the car. It being NOT running isn't exactly a theft deterrent. And, waste gas? I get 10.2 mpg. Not worried about wasting .04 gallons.

They also say no cell phones. Which is proven to be ineffective.

My common sense, and electical/mechanical knowledge, tells me that a spark is more likely when starting a car, than when running. A machine is safest when in a constant state. Things go wrong when you change them (ie, start or stop them).

Ok, I think I'm being argumentative here. And sorry for that.

Ultimately, I think we are arguing over a 1:5,000,000 chances here. Like arguing if it's more dangerous to be outside because of alien abduction or meteor strikes.

The fact is, no one here will ever have a fire at the pump, regardless of which they do.

And since not one person could give me any cohesive argument that damage to my engine may occur while re-fueling with the enigine on I will continue to be a "superhero" who is "trying to prove something", and refuel with my engine on. And yes if a Camaro SS blows up while refueling it will be my dumb ass on the news. And if anybody who is "white&nerdy" would like me to make a video of the amount of time it takes a cold-soaked LT1 to get to 160-170 on the oil temperature I will be happy to......since I have an LT1 with 11,000 miles on it and he will have one, someday. I might have a bit more insight into the amount of time the 20F oil takes to get to 160-170F since I actually drive the car daily and you dream about driving one "soon."

So, I put on a sock then a sock. Then a shoe and then a shoe. You are not gonna believe this. I just talked to a guy who puts on a sock then a shoe then a a sock then a shoe. Can you believe that? What a nut job.
