Main reason that I even brought it up is that here in LA, there are certain laws that the police are exempt from. Mostly "in the line of duty" type things. But, they're not exempt from all laws - only those that interfere with their duties.

However, I got pulled over one time at night by a state trooper for speeding. He was on the shoulder with all lights off. I found the law saying that anyone parked on the shoulder of a state highway was required to have their parking lights on.

I went to court and argued that, not only was the officer not in compliance with the law during the execution of his duties, but that he was perhaps creating a more dangerous situation than I was, at that time.

Case was thrown out.

This is a little OT but worth mentioning. Whether you leave your car running or not, it's always a good idea to take a look at the gas nozzle before you shove it into a capless fuel filler. I have seen this problem on Fords and Hondas but it may impact any capless system. If the gas nozzle has a tip that has a gap at the end, it could get stuck in your filler neck.

The Cadillac ATS we had with the 2.0T would do that, I always shut it down.

If car is running and your keys in your pocket and someone steels your Camaro how far can they get? I know in my Lincoln I left my keys in my wife's pocketbook and she got out and I was able to travel about 1/2 mile and park the car.

You can drive for as long as there is fuel, after you shut it off is when problems arise. I always lock the doors with the fob before I leave it running, unattended.

The way I understand it, at key off - the ECM opens the evap solenoid/valve to allow ease of filling.

That is why you can get a small or large evap leak if filling with they ignition on.

Nice catch on your part!

Someone on this forum (I can't remember who) talked about this like end of 2015 or beginning of 2016. He forgot something in his house. They got out and went inside to grabbed what they needed and left the keys (Inside).

They jumped in the car (That is already started) and headed to the gas station. Turned the car off and filled it. Got back in and it would not start (No Keys). They had to call their neighbor to go into his house and bring him the keys.

Yes, as long as it does not shut off and you have gas it will go.

The 1st and only time I let it run while fueling kicked fuel out the pipe when it stopped.
Never again.
Turn it OFF while fueling. Period. Not worth it.
After that...no issue while fueling w/engine OFF.
Lesson learned.

There's no legitimate reason to do this except laziness.

along with getting in the car while refueling (leading cause of static electric caused fires)

Parking at a pump and going inside for 20 minutes before starting to pump.

Parking at a pump without pulling all the way to the furthest pump on your side that you can.

None of these things are probably going to result in horrible things happening. Doesn't mean they're the right thing to do.

Like others said - you can drive it until you shut it off. And it wont tell you the key is not in the vehicle. Very bad design IMO.

Wifes Grand Cherokee (2014) will beep endlessly and say key not detected on the DIC if you get out with the key. Drives my wife crazy when I refuel or run into the store (yes I leave it running if her or my daughter are in the car - it's my gas money I'm wasting).

I find this 'no idling' issue amusing - the idea is to reduce emissions in most cases. I drive a V-8 that gets about 13 mpg in the city (both my Camaro and my Nissan Titan). If I was worried about emission reduction, I would drive a Prius.

It's just stupid to fill the tank with the engine off. What the hell are you trying to prove? Turn the thing off. Like every gas station tells you to with large signs not easily missed. Because if by chance you DO cause an explosion you will be criminally and fincancially responsible for the damages due to your stupidity.

The main reason I leave it on is that I often gas up when I leave my house, at a gas station 2 minutes away. If the car has been sitting in a 30F garage all night I don't want to start it , drive it cold for 2 minutes and turn it off at the gas station, hence I leave it on. That is not the reason I have always done it but it is the main reason I do it in my SS. Cold start, need gas, too short a drive to properly warm up the oil.

And to those who say "it is illegal", it is not in Colorado if you have a FOB and the vehicle can run without the key inside and the door is locked: Check

And it isn't gonna get stolen when I pay at the pump, it is locked, FOB is in pocket, and Glock is on hip. Running or not, it just isn't gonna happen.

And if gas stations blow-up when people do this I must be the only person in America doing it, because I read the paper and watch the news and have never once heard of a gas station explosion caused by engine-on re-fueling. Please find me a story and prove me wrong.

Thanks for all your responses, none of which gave me any worry about my original question, which was possible damage to my SS. I am not concerned about a one off event on a totally different type of vehicle.
