exhaust question

just ordered the borla type s axel back so when I'm doing the install is it okay to start the car up after I cut the stock mufflers off to hear how it would sound 'straight piped'?

One of the most exhilerating driving experiences I ever had was the day, many years ago, that I needed to take my '76 Cutlass (with the 350 ci) to a muffler shop in the next town over. I'd already cut my old one out. The sound was unreal, the unrestrained power difference, compared to the normally tame, domestic family car muffled state, was mind blowing. It felt just about as close to NASCAR as I will ever drive...

....however.... I would exercise some caution: I'm no expert, but I think that the lack of backpressure can, in some cases, cause internal engine parts to act a little loose and wild. Back pressure is a critical component of the entire combustion process, so proceed with caution. And... I ran a Honda motorcycle a few years back with my exhaust pipe disconnected... didn't see how it could hurt. Apparently, I was mistaken, as I toasted the engine... was told by the mechanic that the heat of the exhaust NEEDED to route through the tailpipe in order to properly cool the head, and without the exhaust plumbing in place, heat wasn't routed out of it properly. This left me with nothing more than a really heavy bicycle that ya couldn't even peddle. (edit: pedal. I guess I couldn't peddle it, either, though...)

His car will still have the manifolds, cats, and pipes up the axle. Now if you were to run the engine without headers or manifolds you can really cause problems. You also have to remember that most motorcycles are air cooled that's where you ran into problems there. Just look at race cars, they are basically headers, and in most cases a simple turn down.
